König der neuen Herrscherdynastie, welcher als Erster ein dauerhaftes Bündnis mit dem Papst einging, was die Geschichte der folgenden Jahrhunderte maßgeblich beeinflusste. Er zeigt auf, dass dessen Sohn Karl der Große wiederum auf gesellschaftliche und politische Strukturen aufbauen konnte, die seine Vorfahren grundgelegt hatten. Auch unter Karls Nachkommen sieht Ubl trotz Unruhen die Herrschaftskontinuität gewahrt und begreift die Zeit der Karolinger als Epoche, in der im politischen und kirchlichen Bereich eine Homogenität geschaffen wurde, die für die weiteren Jahrhunderte prägend war.
