Description: Byline: T. Keck (1,2219,2,2219), A. Rozsasi (1,2219), P.M. Abstract: Introduction We present a review of nasal-air conditioning, a process essential to undisturbed gas exchange and cleansing of the respiratory mucosa in the nose. Methods A selective literature review was made on the basis of in vivo measurements and computer simulation of the upper airways as well as the authors' own clinical and experimental data. Results and discussion Healthy subjects normally breathe through the nose, although the nasal airways have significantly higher airway resistance compared to the oral cavity, which is opened for breathing during exercise, in the case of nasal airway blockage, or in allergic rhinitis. In addition to olfaction, the main tasks of nasal breathing include: cleansing, defense, and conditioning (i.e., humidification and heating). The current knowledge of nasal conditioning processes will be discussed. In addition, research activities of particular relevance for diagnosis and intervention in various pathologies of the upper airways will be presented. Description: This paper analyzes the information content of metadata and full texts in German Medical Science (GMS) articles in English language. The object of the study is to compare semantic entities that are used to enrich GMS metadata (titles and abstracts) and GMS full texts. The aim of the study is to test whether using full texts increases the value added information. The comparison and evaluation of semantic entities was done statistically. Measures of descriptive statistics were gathered for this purpose. In addition to the ratio of central tendencies and scatterings, we computed the overlaps and complements of the values. The results show a distinct increase of information when full texts are added. On average, metadata contain 25 different entities and full texts 215. 89% of the concepts in the metadata are also represented in the full texts. Hence, 11% of the metadata concepts are found in the metadata only. In summary, the results show that the addition of full texts increases the informational value, e.g. for information retrieval processes.

In: Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte / Economic History Yearbook, 2013, Vol.54(1), pp.15-35
Description: In this paper we present new quantitative results on the linkages between absolute income levels, relative incomes, income inequality, and attitudes towards redistribution in a large sample of countries over the past 30 years. While we find that absolute income levels have a significant but very small effect on well-being, we find that relative incomes matter much more. In addition, we find that preferences for inequality are a significant driver of well-being. Lastly, we observe that overall inequality has an additional negative impact on well-being in a country in all three country-groupings. Taken together, this suggests that inequality has a rather strong negative impact on well-being. In fact, depending on the context, reducing inequality can do more to promote subjective well-being than increasing economic growth.

We report the case of a young man who took a large amount of caffeine powder dissolved in water in a suicide attempt. He was found comatose. The initial diagnosis was difficult. In hospital he suffered from rhabdomyolysis with renal failure and sepsis rapidly developed. After renal replacement treatment with hemodialysis, long-term artificial ventilation with tracheotomy and a 3‑week stay in the intensive care unit, the patient could be discharged to a rehabilitation center.
