    Description: Two novel series of potent and selective matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors, involving unique binding mode at the active site and not interacting with the catalytic zinc, were collectively investigated to quantify their inhibition actions in relation with chemometric descriptors. Significant correlations, between their MMP13 inhibition activity and 2D-descriptors, were obtained through the combinatorial protocol in multiple linear regression (CP-MLR) computational procedure. The derived bi-variant models, validated internally and externally, were able to account for 86.5% of variance in the observed MMP13 inhibition activities. The filtered descriptors, from CP-MLR, satisfactorily explained the biological phenomenon under investigation. However the descriptors, MPC10, N-075 and C-030 accounting, respectively, for molecular path (bond) count of order 10, the structural fragments CH--N--CH and N--CH--N of aromatic ring remained prime to address the MMP13 inhibition actions of the compounds. From the highest significant correlations, it appeared that the higher value of MPC10 and absence of these aromatic ring fragments, are conducive in further improvement of MMP13 inhibition activity of a compound. The partial least squares (PLS) analysis has further confirmed the dominance of the identified descriptors. In the analysis, two-components remained optimum for these descriptors which are able to explain 89.3% of variances. Applicability domain (AD) analysis revealed that the suggested models have acceptable predictability. All the compounds remained within the AD of the proposed models and were evaluated correctly. Based on the inferences drawn from the study, some new analogues were suggested for further exploration. Their predicted MMP13 inhibition activities were much higher than the highest active congener of the original series.

    Description: The development of antibiotics has played a significant role in combating the dreaded infectious disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, typhoid fever and meningitis in 20th century. However, the improper use of antibiotics led to the development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in microbial flora raising a global public health concern of 21st century. This unforeseen threat demands the development of new drugs and strategies for combating antibiotic resistance shown by many microbial species. Recent developments in nanotechnology to engineer nanoparticles with desired physicochemical properties have been projected as a new line of defense against MDR micro-organism. In this review, we summarized and discussed the recent development demonstrating the potential of nanomaterials to evade the MDR. Nanoparticles have shown effective antimicrobial activity against MDR bacteria, such as Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, vancomycin resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and others. Furthermore, new strategies like combination of radiation and drugs with nanoparticle that are being explored to potentiate the effectiveness against MDR bacteria have also been summarized.

    Description: In this paper we compare the electrical behavior of Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge) and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) nanowire surrounding gate field effect transistors for high frequency applications. A fully ballistic quantum mechanical transport approach based on Non Equilibrium Greens Function (NEGF) was employed to study electrical characteristics of cylindrical silicon nanowire transistors. We have taken effective mass approximation with the use of uncoupled mode space method (UMS) in this approach. We used cylindrical coordinate systems in our modeling to include exact sense of cylindrical nanowire. We found that GaAs-NWT performance is better than others for microwave applications.

    Description: ZnO based bottom-gate thin film transistor (TFT) with SiO2 as insulating layer has been fabricated with two different structures. The effect of formation of mesa structure on the electrical characteristics of the TFTs has been studied. The formation of mesa structure of ZnO channel region can definitely result in better control over channel region and enhance value of channel mobility of ZnO TFT. As a result, by fabricating a mesa structured TFT, a better value of mobility and on-state current are achieved at low voltages. A typical saturation current of 1.85 x 10(-7) A under a gate bias of 50 V is obtained for non mesa structure TFT while for mesa structured TFT saturation current of 5 x 10(-5) A can be obtained at comparatively very low gate bias of 6.4 V.

    Description: The Randomized response (RR) technique with two decks of cards proposed by Odumade and Singh (2009) can always be made more efficient than the RR techniques proposed by Warner (1965), Mangat and Singh (1990), and Mangat (1994) by adjusting the proportion of cards in the decks. Abdelfatah et al. (2011) modified Odumade and Singh (2009) RR technique and claimed that their method can be more efficient than the Warner (1965) model. In this paper it is shown that such claim is not valid and the RR technique proposed by Abdelfatah et al. (2011) is in fact less efficient than the Warner (1965) technique at equal protection of respondents. Such finding are recently shown by Giordano and Perri (2011)....
