Content: Far from a conventional biopic, Steven Soderbergh's film about Che Guevara is a fascinating exploration of the revolutionary as icon. Daring in its refusal to make the socialist leader into an easy martyr or hero, Che paints a vivid, naturalistic portrait of the man himself (Benicio del Toro, in a stunning, Cannes-award-winning performance), from his overthrow of the Batista dictatorship to his 1964 United Nations trip to the end of his short life. Composed of two parts, the first a kaleidoscopic view of the Cuban Revolution and the second an all-action dramatization of Che's failed campaign in Bolivia, Che is Soderbergh's most epic vision. Content: Extras: Making Che (49:52) A top-notch making-of documentary, the piece traces the convoluted development of the film, which began with a focus on Che's campaign in Bolivia and expanded backwards in time into the story of the Cuban revolution. Producer Laura Bickford, Steven Soderbergh, and Benicio Del Toro began working on the film in the mid 1990s. Fascinating tidbits include that, at one point, Terrence Malick was interested in directing the movie, and Soderbergh was cool with that because he was curious to see what Malick would do with the material. Conflicting schedules put an end to Malick's involvement. The documentary also covers the arduous shoot, and Soderbergh's use of the Red One digital camera (and how its compact size allowed them to shoot very quickly in natural light, and to download dailies and begin editing immediately after a day's shoot). The documentary is beautifully presented in a 1.78:1 anamorphic transfer with Dolby stereo surround audio. End of a Revolution (25:53) In early 1968, director Brian Moser shot this documentary at the site of Guevara's execution. The piece begins with Che's death, but focuses primarily on the history of Bolivia and President René Barrientos' agrarian reforms. For the most part, the documentary is antagonistic towards Guevara, presenting him as an intruding foreign revolutionary whose presence wasn't wanted by the country's poor farmers and miners. The documentary is in reasonable shape given its age. The presentation is full frame with mono audio. Interviews from Cuba (35:02) Laura Bickford and Benicio Del Toro conducted video interviews of Generals Enrique and Rogelio Acevedo, Ricardo Alarcón, Leonardo Tamayo Núñez, and Harry Villegas, who were major players in the Cuban Revolution or Che's campaign in Bolivia, as well as Cuban Revolution historians Mario Mencía Cobas and Herberto N. Acosta. The interviews cover the revolution, Castro's 26th of July Movement, and Guevara's capture in Bolivia. The presentation is 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen with mono audio. Che and the Digital Revolution (33:21) This piece is devoted to Soderbergh's use of the Red One digital camera, which allowed him to make this epic duology quickly and inexpensively. Che was the first feature to be shot with the Red One. In fact, the camera was so hot off of the assembly line that it arrived only days before the shoot began. The documentary is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby stereo surround audio. (DVD Verdict)
