"'Ich habe einen sehr interessanten Kompositionsplan und zwar will ich eine große Symphonie schreiben, die den Untertitel ‚Konzentrationslagersymphonie‘ haben wird. Es wird auch in einigen Stellen Chor verwendet, obwohl es durchaus ein Orchesterwerk ist.' Das schrieb Hanns Eisler 1935 aus dem Exil an Bert Brecht, von dem ein Großteil der vertonten Texte des Werks stammen. An der Deutschen Sinfonie arbeitete Eisler viele Jahre - eigentlich bis zur Uraufführung im April 1959. Es war wohl ein Ringen um die Form, mit der sich der Komponist von der klassischen Sinfonie abgrenzen und zu einem proletarischen Oratorium hinwenden wollte, ohne aber auf avantgardistische Elemente - Eisler war schließlich Schüler von Arnold Schönberg - zu verzichten. Das wurde, gerade in der stalinistischen DDR, ein zunehmend schwieriges Unterfangen. Die hier präsentierte Aufzeichnung mit dem Leipziger Rundfunkchor und -Sinfonieorchester unter Adolf Fritz Guhl wurde 1963, ein Jahr nach Eislers Tod, in der Leipziger Kongresshalle realisiert."
