What socio-cultural knowledge do textbooks impart? How can their constructions of knowledge be described in detail, assuming that language is important in students’ constructing their world, their values, and conception of a ‘normal’ social reality? From a linguistic point of view, no satisfactory answers can be gained for example by using content analysis only. The applications of linguistic methods in research on teaching and learning materials are various. This paper wants to show exemplarily which methods linguistics can offer and that a closer look on textbook language could reveal, how language contributes to the constitution and construction of socio-cultural knowledge.
