Angesichts des demographischen Wandels stellt die Alzheimer-Demenz eine besondere Herausforderung für moderne Gesellschaften dar. Der gegenwärtige Diskurs wird dabei von einem bestimmten Konzept der Demenz dominiert, das aus seiner Herkunft aus dem Bereich der Humanmedizin herrührt. Durch eine Übertragung medizinischer Modelle und Konzepte wurde deren methodischer Reduktionismus in den allgemeinen Diskurs übertragen. Ethisch relevant ist dieser Vorgang in seinem anthropologischen Reduktionismus, der zu Einseitigkeiten in der Bewertung führt und Leerstellen zur Folge hat. Der Beitrag schlägt im Unterschied dazu vor, auf der Grundlage einer ganzheitlichen Anthropologie Demenzen als Beziehungsgeschehen zu definieren. Erst von hier aus können Fragen nach ethischen Herausforderungen, die mit der Betreuung dementer Menschen einhergehen, angemessen diskutiert werden.
