Japan's 1987 fiscal year seems to be one of the most surprisingly turnarounds with a real GNP growth rate of 4 per cent (until March 31, 1988). The economy was powered by a surge in domestic demand, fuelled by a house-building boom, a consumer spending spree and a government reflationary package. Contribution of domestic and external demand to GNP growth, fiscal 1982-1987. However, huge trade surpluses are likely to persist, giving rise to further friction with the US.
