Content: "Mit der Veröffentlichung der 'Aesthetica' löste Baumgarten ein, was er in seiner Metaphysica (PhB 351) im Ansatz formulierte: die Ästhetik als eigenständige Disziplin, das ist als 'Wissenschaft der sinnlichen Erkenntnis', systematisch zu begründen und zur Darstellung zu bringen. Der Impuls, der davon ausging, hatte wirkungsgeschichtlich zunächst nur als Entwurf einer besonderen Philosophie der Kunst breite Resonanz. Das eigentliche Ziel war jedoch sehr viel weiter gesteckt: Gegen Wolff, der die Formen der 'sinnlichen Erkenntnis' noch dem 'unteren Erkenntnisvermögen' zurechnete, erweist Baumgarten das Eigenrecht der sensitiven gegenüber der rationalen Erkenntnis."

Content: Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714–1762) ist der Begründer der Ästhetik als eigener philosophischer Disziplin. Sein bedeutendstes Werk zur Ästhetik als 'Wissenschaft der sinnlichen Erkenntnis', die er der Logik gleichberechtigt an die Seite stellt, ist die Aesthetica (1750/58), die mit dieser Ausgabe nach rund 250 Jahren erstmals in einer vollständigen deutschen Übersetzung vorliegt. Ausgehend von der ontologischen Auffassung des Einzelwesens als durchgängig bestimmtes Individuum, dessen Merkmalsfülle der deutlichen Erkenntnis der logischen Analyse entgeht, sich jedoch in der sinnlichen Erscheinung des phaenomenon offenbart, erkennt Baumgarten den klar-verworrenen Vorstellungen der sinnlichen Erkenntnis eine eigene, fundamentale Bedeutung für das Erfassen des Wirklichen zu. Auf der Grundlage seiner Psychologie und Semiotik begreift Baumgarten die Ästhetik nicht nur als Wissenschaft des sinnlichen Erkennens, sondern auch des sinnlichen Darstellens. Sie ist damit zugleich eine Theorie der freien Künste und auch für Rhetorik und Poetik systematisch leitbildend, aus deren historischem Fundus Baumgarten Strukturen und Anschauungsmaterial für die neu zu konstituierende philosophische Disziplin schöpft. Der Text besaß für die weitere Entwicklung der Ästhetik und Kunsttheorie im 18. Jahrhundert eine epochale Bedeutung, die er bis heute nicht verloren hat. In ihrer Einleitung stellt Dagmar Mirbach Baumgartens Projekt der Ästhetik im Kontext seiner metaphysischen und erkenntnistheoretischen Prämissen dar und eröffnet neue Perspektiven zum Verständnis. In einem Anhang werden diejenigen Paragraphen von Baumgartens Metaphysik und Ethik, auf die er in der Ästhetik verweist, übersetzt. Anmerkungen sowie ein umfangreiches Glossar erschließen den Text.

Content: Mit seiner 'Aesthetica' hat Baumgarten die gleichnamige philosophische Disziplin begründet. Der umfangreiche, in zwei Teilen erschienene Text liegt nun erstmals in einer vollständigen deutschen Übersetzung vor.

Die dem lateinischen Text beigegebene Übersetzung ist besonders wertvoll, weil Baumgartens kompakte und eigenwillige lateinische Ausdrucksweise auch dem Kenner vielfach Schwierigkeiten bereitet.

Content: Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten publizierte 1760, zwei Jahre vor seinem Tod, eine in Frankfurt/Oder gehaltene Vorlesung zu den Anfangsgründen der praktischen Metaphysik (Initia philosophiae practicae primae). In dieser entwickelt er in 205 kurzen Paragraphen die sowohl für die Ethik als auch für das Recht gültigen Grundlagen einer allgemeinen Moralphilosophie. Dies geschieht auf der Basis der Begriffe von Pflicht und Norm (Erstes Kapitel: 'Die Verpflichtung', a) 'im allgemeinen', b) 'die moralische Nötigung'?, während ihre Anwendung in moralischen Urteilen, nach Klärung der Begriffe der Institutionen des Rechts (Gesetz, Gesetzgeber, Rechtsprinzipien, rechtliche Sanktionen), vermittels einer ausführlichen Theorie der Zurechnung gesichert wird. Nicht nur bietet Baumgarten mit seinem Entwurf geradezu ein Schnittmuster für Kants Metaphyik der Sitten samt ihrer Grundlegung, sondern prägt auch über den engeren Bereich der Philosophie hinaus Theorie, Methodik und Begrifflichkeit der Jurisprudenz. Der Band ist also nicht nur für die Moralphilosophie von Bedeutung, sondern auch für alle, die an einer philosophischen Grundlegung des Rechts interessiert sind.

Content: The papers in this volume were delivered at the first international colloquium by the Jacob Taubes Minerva Center for Religious Anthropology at Bar Ilan University, held in February 1995. Concepts of Self, Soul and Body are so close to the physiological layers of life that we may imagine them to be biological as well; but in fact, they are social constructs, and a source of fundamental metaphors for the classification of experience. They thus help organize the world, at the same time as they express basic human identity. They vary from culture to culture and can productively be compared and contrasted from one setting to another. We intend these papers to be a test case of the benefit to be gained from attention to Religious Anthropology.

Content: The papers published in this volume were presented at the Third International Orion Symposium (1998), to mark the centennial of the discovery of the Damascus Document (CD) in the Cairo Geniza and the final publication of the 4QD manuscripts in the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series. Since its discovery, CD has sparked lively debate about its sectarian origins and halacha, issues with far-reaching implications not only for the development of Jewish law but also for the very nature of Second Temple period Judaism and its continuity into the early medieval period.
