    Note: Eine Biographie im üblichen Sinn des Wortes wird man in diesem Buch nicht finden, denn über das Leben Euklids ist keine einzige gesicherte Tatsache bekannt. Beide Wörter sind auch in der Gegenwart in mannigfachen Zusammensetzungen in Benutzung: euklidische und nichteuklidische Geometrie, euklidische Räume, euklidische Metrik, euklidische Ringe, euklidischer Algorithmus, Elementarmathematik, elementare Theorie usw. beherrschen das Vokabular der modernen Mathematik. Zugleich ist das Wissen des zeitgenössischen Mathematikers und an der Mathematik Interessierten um den Inhalt, die Bedeutung und die historische Entwicklung der Elemente auf einem Tiefpunkt angelangt, während andererseits ein kleines internationales Häuflein von Spezialisten fleißig weiter an der riesigen Flut von Sekundarliteratur zu diesem Thema produziert - und dabei nach unserem Gefühl am Informationsbedürfnis einer breiten Schicht möglicher Interessenten vorbeiproduziert.
