Note:
Nach dem Erscheinen des im November 1928 zur Veröffentlichung gelangten ersten und des im Mai 1932 herausgegebenen letzten, d. h. zehnten Bandes des Handbuches der Bodenlehre sind 11 bzw. 7 Jahre verflossen. Es ist daher verständlich, daß sich infolge der im letzten Jahrzehnt einsetzenden rastlosen Forschung auf dem Gebiete der wissenschaftlichen Bodenkunde alsbald ein fühlbarer Mangel im Gebrauch des Handbuches heraussteilen mußte, nämlich die Gefahr, auf manchen Teilgebieten nicht mehr den Anforderungen der neuesten Zeit gerecht zu werden. Infolgedessen haben sich Verleger und Herausgeber entschlossen, durch Herausgabe eines elften Bandes, der den Namen "Erster Ergänzungsband" führt, den Inhalt des Handbuches so zu vervollständigen und umzugestalten, daß dieses durch dessen Gebrauch wieder die zeitgemäße wissenschaftliche Höhe erhält und allen Anforderungen der neu erworbenen Erkenntnisse der letzten Jahre entspricht. Jedoch erwies es sich als zweckdienlich, nicht abermals sämtliche im Handbuch behandelten Gebiete, wie insbesondere die mehr als Grundfächer oder Schwesterdisziplinen in Frage kommenden und z. T. auch die rein praktischen Verhältnissen Rechnung tragenden Gebietsteile zu vervollständigen, sondern es wurde das Hauptgewicht auf die Neugestaltung der die moderne Bodenlehre betreffenden Kapitel gelegt, die am deutlichsten den großen Fortschritt in der Erkenntnis vom Wesen des Bodens als einer selbständig wissenschaftlichen Disziplin zur Wiedergabe bringen, um damit den augenblicklichen Entwicklungszustand unserer Wissenschaft am schärfsten vor Augen zu führen
