Pioneering the use of Church history in popular polemic, Lemaire de Belges gives a history of papal schisms and Gallican councils, disparaging the papacy's record in order to justify Louis XII's current war with Julius II. Pressing international current affairs into use he shows Shah Isma'il of Persia and the Sultan of Egypt paradoxically better disposed towards Christian kings than is the Pope.
