Freiburgs Gründungsgeschichte ist seit dem 19. Jahrhundert intensiv erforscht worden. Als auf der grünen Wiese gegründete Stadt galt sie lange als paradigmatisches und frühestes Beispiel einer planmäßigen Anlage durch die Zähringer. Dieses Bild haben neuere Forschungen relativiert, wobei sich insbesondere der ausschließliche Vergleich mit Städten im Reich als hinderlich herausgestellt hat. Denn die Zähringer besaßen weitreichende Verbindungen nach Wallonien und Flandern, in das Rhônetal und nach Oberitalien. Dies zu berücksichtigen, eröffnet nun neue Perspektiven. Der Band konzentriert sich beim Vergleich auf die europäischen Stadtwerdungen des hohen Mittelalters, auf spezifisches Expertenwissen im Bereich von Technik und Infrastruktur sowie auf die Ausformung städtischer Räume. So sollen anlässlich des Stadtjubiläums 1120-2020 die Konturen der Freiburger Stadtwerdung deutlicher hervortreten
