Este artículo ofrece una revisión crítica de las nociones de trabajo de campo en boga en los Estados Unidos, princi- palmente definidas por la antropología posmoderna y simbólica. Sugiere que los antropólogos mexicanos tienen que convertirse en receptores críticos de estas propuestas. Ante sujetos antropológicos construidos por las interre- laciones entre economía, poder y cultura en un contexto global, el autor plantea desarrollar una propuesta de trabajo de campo que parta de tradiciones canónicas y registros de datos etnográficos más allá de los conseguidos por la interacción cara a cara.
