E. Hall ist klassische Philologin am Londoner King's College und für ihre wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten mehrfach ausgezeichnet worden. Die Autorin nähert sich ihrem Gegenstand in sehr origineller Weise. Sie hat 10 wesentliche Eigenschaften der "alten Griechen" ausgemacht (u.a.: meeresaffin, misstrauisch gegenüber Autoritäten, individualistisch, offen für Neues, wissbegierig, humorvoll, wettbewerbsorientiert, vergnügungssüchtig), denen sie 10 Epochen und Regionen zuordnet und diese auf 10 Kapitel verteilt. Da die Kapitel chronologisch fortschreiten, bietet das Buch zugleich eine interessante Geschichte der griechischen Antike, die von den seefahrenden Mykenern bis zu "griechischen Heiden und Christen" im 6. Jahrhundert n.Chr. reicht. Der Anhang bietet eine Zeittafel, weiterführende Literatur und ein Register. Das Buch ist gut lesbar, anregend, bisweilen aber thematisch recht sprunghaft. Durch seine unsystematische Herangehensweise eignet es sich nicht als Lerngrundlage und nur bedingt als Einführung. Ergänzend (z.B. zur "Geschichte der Antike", ID-B 22/15, 46/15) einsetzbar.
