Die vorliegende Studie über theoretische und empirische Ansätze zum Problem der Ehestabilität hatte zwei Ausgangspunkte, nämlich zum einen meine Beschäftigung mit dem theoretischen Ansatz der 'New Home Economics' von Gary BECKER, zum anderen einen Hinweis von Professor OPP auf die Untersuchung von BRINTON (1983), die sich mit der Erklärbarkeit japanischer Scheidungsraten im Kontext des Modells ratlonalen Handelns befaßt. Zunächst wurde versucht, aus dem Gebäude der Ökonomischen Theorie der Familie Hypothesen über die Ursachen von Ehescheldungen abzuleiten. Beim Vergleich dieser Hypothesen mit soziologischen und psychologischen Aussagen erweist sich eine systematisierende Rekonstruktion dieser 'traditionellen' sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorien zur Ehestabilität als erforderlich. Eine solche Rekonstruktion steht im Zentrum von Kapitel II der vorliegenden Studie. Kapitel HI enhält die Aussagen einer an BECKER orientierten Ökonomischen Theorie der Ehescheidung sowie einen Vergleich dieser Theorie mit den traditionellen Ansätzen. Im Kapitel N schließlich wird versucht, die in den vorangegangenen Abschnitten aufgestellten Hypothesen zur Scheidungshäufigkeit in einer Aggregatdatenanalyse über die Kreise der Bundesrepublik Deutschland empirisch zu prüfen. Um diese Analysen zu ermöglichen, wurde nach Durchsicht vergleichbarer Analysen für andere Staaten eine Datenbank demographischer und sozioökonomischer Merkmale der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf Kreisebene aufgebaut. Allen Personen und Institutionen, die mir bei Durchführung dieser Untersuchung behilflich waren, sei hiermit herzlich gedankt.
