Der 1788 in Danzig geborene Arthur Schopenhauer doktorierte 1813 an der Universität Jena und veröffentlichte 1819 sein Hauptwerk „Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung“. 1833 ließ er sich in Frankfurt am Main nieder, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 1860 als Privatgelehrter lebte und seine Werke verfasste – u.a. die kleinen philosophischen Schriften, die „Parerga und Paralipomena“ mit den „Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit“. In seinen hinterlassenen Manuskripten, die Schopenhauer „Gedankenbücher“ nannte, notierte er vor allem philosophische Überlegungen, die als Vorarbeiten für seine Werke dienten. – So enthält auch das „philosophische Tagebuch“ COGITATA (von cogitatum, cogitatus, der Gedanke, das Gedachte, das Denken), das er von 1830 bis 1833 führte, nicht nur Gedanken, sondern auch Auszüge, Inhaltsangaben, Stellenhinweise aus verschiedenen Werken, Entwürfe zu Vorreden und teilweise bissige Kritiken. Die in diesen Bänden festgehaltenen Gedanken bilden so gleichsam das Skelett zu Schopenhauers System.
