Wohngruppenkonzepte für Menschen mit Demenz haben in den Niederlanden eine lange Tradition- wegweisend war zum Beispiel das 1989 gebaute Anton-Pieck-Hofje, das mehrere Wohngruppen für jeweils sechs Bewohner bietet. Auch in der Einrichtung "Hogewey" nahe Amsterdam leben demenzkranke Menschen in Wohngruppen, die nach bestimmten "Lebensstilen" organisiert sind. Allen diesen Einrichtungen liegt "Kleinmaßstäblichkeit" zu Grunde, ein Grundsatz, dem sich die Architekten Jarno Nillesen uns Stefan Opitz intensiv gewidmet haben: in ihrem Buch "Dimensionen für Demenz. Kleinmaßstäbliche Wohnformen für Menschen mit Demenz" Führen sie ein in die Lebenswelt demenzkranker Menschen und erklären, wie die räumliche Umgebung auf ihr Erleben wirkt. Sie greifen dabei auch umstrittene Themen wie "geteilte Badezimmer" , "Rundgänge", "Lebensstilgruppen" auf und öffnen mit ihren Entwürfen und ihrer differenzierten Betrachtung den Blick für unterschiedliche architektonische Gestaltungswege.
