Although it is one of the world’s largest labour-exporting countries, Indonesia has been given but little consideration as regards the sociology of new international migrations. By proposing a social anthropology of the migrations of Indonesian workers to Malaysia and Singapore, this book shows that they are, however, key to the transformation of Southeast Asian societies and to the globalization of regional economies. Based on an ethnographic approach, Loïs Bastide apprehends these flows in direct contact with those involved and at the same time describes their social, political, cultural and historical backgrounds. As such, he sheds light on transnational areas linked to the processes of this “globalized precariat”: whilst societies are opening up as a result of migrations, lives are now being lived out at a transnational level. To understand these transformations, it is fundamental, today, to describe the various ways people live in transnational areas.
