Das Leben der Elisabeth von der Pfalz, Äbtissin von Herford, weist eine Vielzahl von Facetten auf: Sie stand vom Anfang bis zum Ende unter dem Einfluß der Großen Politik, vom Dreißigjährigen Krieg bis zu den Kriegen Ludwigs des XIV. von Frankreich; als Äbtissin von Herford war sie selbst Reichsstand. Enge Kontakte unterhielt sie mit großen Philosophen und Mathematikern ihrer Zeit (u.a. mit G. W. Leibniz) ebenso wie mit Spiritualisten. Über ihre jüngste Schwester Sophie, die spätere erste Kurfürstin von Hannover, stand sie in Verbindung zu den Welfen in Osnabrück und Hannover. Auch nach Wolfenbüttel reichen ihre persönlichen Beziehungen. Damit wird die Literaturgeschichte berührt. - Im Frühjahr 2007 fand in Herford ein Symposium statt, das es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hatte, die Forschungen über die Herforder Äbtissin auf ein neues Fundament zu stellen und weitere Untersuchungen über Elisabeth und die Reichsabtei anzuregen. Die dort gehaltenen Vorträge werden in diesem Tagungsband, meist in einer erweiterten Fassung, vorgelegt.
