Inhalt: Novelist, essayist, naturalist, philosopher, and social critic, the late Edward Abbey may have been the most popular writer to take the American Southwest as his subject. In a career that began in the early 1950s and ended only with his death in 1989, he published twenty-one books - among them Desert Solitaire, his account of his seasons as a park ranger at Utah's Arches National Monument, and the bestselling novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which introduced the term ecodefense to the struggle to protect the environment - and won the praise and admiration of readers and writers alike. (No less an authority than Larry McMurtry called Abbey "the Thoreau of the American West.") Now James Bishop Jr., who has been granted full access to all of Abbey's papers, has fashioned the first complete and most revealing portrait of this singular American author
Inhalt: Born in Appalachian Pennsylvania in time for the Great Depression, Edward Paul Abbey first saw the arid landscape of the Colorado Plateau when he was a teenager riding the rails and seems never to have recovered from the experience. "I love it so much," he said, "that I find it hard to talk about it," but talk and write he did, in defiant celebration and high-spirited defense of America's last wild Eden, engaged as he was in an affair of the heart that, as Bishop says, "caused him to be hailed, jailed, and railed against." For if Abbey now seems like a prophet - he went after ranching, agricultural, mining, and timber enterprises feeding off federally subsidized land, water, and trees three decades ago - throughout much of his life he was vilified as a crackpot, a dangerous radical, and worse
Inhalt: And if he was beloved by his readers and embraced by partisans of various causes, this deliberately provocative, sardonic, and somewhat shy desert rat went through five marriages and countless affairs before, late in life, he began to show any deep tenderness or understanding toward women. In these areas, as elsewhere, Bishop does not hesitate to present Abbey in the full roundness of his contrariness, his passions, his need to put words to paper

Anmerkung: There is no doubt that we have, during the last decade, moved into a "golden age" of condensed matter science. The sequence of discoveries of novel new states of matter and their rapid assimilation into experimental and theoretical research, as well as devices, has been remarkable. To name but a few: spin glasses; incommensurate, fractal, quasicrystal structures; synthetic metals; quantum well fabrication; fractional quantum Hall effect: solid state chaos; heavy fermions; and most spectacularly high-temperature superconductivity. This rapid evolution has been marked by the need to address the reality of materials in "extreme" conditions - - disordered, nonlinear systems in reduced dimensions, restricted geometries and at mesoscopic scales, often with striking competitions between several length and frequency scales, and between strong electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions. In such new territory it is not surprising that very interdisciplinary approaches are being explored and traditional boundaries between subjects and disciplines re-defined. In theory, this is evident, for instance, in attempts: (1) to advance the state of the art for electronic structure calculations so as to handle strongly interacting many-body systems and delicate competitions for collective ground states (spin models or many-electron Hamiltonians, field theory, band structure, quantum chemistry and numerical approaches); or (2) to understand pattern formation and complex (including chaotic) dynamics in extended systems. This demands close involvement with applied mathematics, numerical simulations and statistical mechanics techniques

Anmerkung: The collection of articles in this volume represents the proceedings of the inaugural Conference of the Institute of Theoretical Matter Physics at the University of Florence, Italy, June 7-13, 1990. The aim of this Institute (sponsored by the Consorzio Interuniversitario di Fisica della Materia, INFM) is to foster interdisciplinary approaches to theoretical problems in Solid State, Electronics and Optics. Correspondingly, the Conference surveyed a broad scope of modern analytic techniques in nonlinear science and their application to novel liquids, solids and optical environments. The Conference was held at Centro Studi CISL, a magnificent Villa up to Florence. The major topics addressed through survey and specialized lectures, discussions and posters were: Complexity and Coherence in spin glasses, associative distributive memory, low dimensional electronic materials, magnets, Josephson junction arrays, optics, semiconductors, convection cells, material science, high-temperature superconductivity; Physics of Quantum Devices such as nonlinear feedback oscillators, macroscopic quantum tunneling, hetero structures, quantum ballistic devices, tunneling in atomic devices; Field Theory and Statistical Mechanics, especially for soliton-bearing and quantum chaotic systems. Many exciting ideas and results were presented and debated in lively fashion. Perhaps two major themes were evident throughout the workshop

Inhalt: "This collection is a magnificent confirmation of Lowell's prediction. From several thousand letters, written over fifty years - from 1928 when she was seventeen (and already a poet) to the day of her death, in Boston in 1979 - Robert Giroux, her editor during her lifetime, has selected over 500 and has written a detailed and informative introduction." "In one sense, Elizabeth Bishop's letters constitute her autobiography, including the story of her love for Lota Soares in Brazil, which ended with Lota's tragic suicide fifteen years later. They also record her intense relationships with her early mentor Marianne Moore and later with Robert Lowell. For Bishop, letter-writing was a joy and a necessity, an embodiment of the links between people, but also a facet of her art, conjuring the world in words. Some letters are carefully composed, elegant in style; some are spontaneous and witty, alive with unexpected detail; some contain poems sent as gifts; others are cries from the heart. Sometimes she ponders on her childhood, on her struggle to create, or to resist drink, but more often she responds fully and vividly to the immediate moment, the color of the sky, the books she has been reading, the friend she misses, the meal she is cooking, the toucan or cat she is observing, the room she is painting in a "Harlequinade" pattern of big colored diamonds." "One Art takes us behind Bishop's formal sophistication and reserve, displaying to the full the gift for friendship, the striving for perfection, and the passionate, questing, rigorous spirit that made her a great poet."--BOOK JACKET.
