Der vorliegende Band eröffnet das Handbuch mit einigen Aufsätzen über Themen, die die allgemeine Grundlage unserer Auffassung der Katalyse bilden. Dabei kann der Rahmen nicht zu eng gezogen werden, da ja das Verständnis der Katalyse nichts anderes ist, als Verständnis chemischer Reaktionen überhaupt. Die Sonderstellung der Katalyse wurde in einem einleitenden Aufsatz herausgestellt, in einem zweiten kurz die Forschungsmethoden betrachtet und dann die atomistischen, reaktionskinetischen und thermodynamischen Grundlagen der Katalyse einzeln abgehandelt. Wir glauben, daß eine breite Darlegung der wichtigen und oft mißverständlich angewandten wellenmechanischen Grundlagen der Chemie bis zu den Anwendungen auf die Katalyse hier ebenso am Platz war, wie eine übersichtliche Darstellung der reaktionskinetischen Gesichtspunkte, die bei katalytischen Problemen zusammenkommen können. Unter der "thermodynamischen Behandlung" endlich verstehen wir nicht die Betonung der hinreichend bekannten gegenseitigen Unabhängigkeit kinetischer und thermodynamischer Anlagen, sondern vielmehr die positive Herausarbeitung der neuerdings sich andeutenden begrifflichen und tatsächlichen Zusammenhänge. Es konnte nicht ausbleiben, daß man dabei einzelne Dinge, wie etwa die Theorie des "transition state", in diesen drei Aufsätzen mehrmals findet, da Atomphysik, Kinetik und Energetik schließlich auf dasselbe Reaktionsgeschehen der Katalyse zugespitzt auftreten mußten
