Kurzfassung: Data analysts in industry and academia make heavy use of market segmentation analysis to develop tourism knowledge and select commercially attractive target segments. Within academic research alone, approximately 5% of published articles use market segmentation. However, the validity of data-driven market segmentation analyses depends on having available a sample of adequate size. Moreover, no guidance exists for determining what an adequate sample size is. In the present simulation study using artificial data of known structure, the impact of the difficulty of the segmentation task on the required sample size is analyzed in dependence of the number of variables in the segmentation base. Under all simulated data circumstances, a sample size of 70 times the number of variables proves to be adequate. This finding is of substantial practical importance because it will provide guidance to data analysts in academia and industry who wish to conduct reliable and valid segmentation studies.

Kurzfassung: The destination is the focal point of tourism marketing activities. Many definitions of destinations have been proposed in the past, but it remains unclear what a destination is from a consumer perspective at early stages of the destination choice process. Yet, it is the consumer perspective that matters most. The present study investigates consumer perceptions of what a destination is. Results indicate that (1) consumers have a very broad position on what a destination is, (2) the distance between the destination and home affects the size of the geographical area perceived as destination, and (3) geographically larger destinations are severely underresearched. Findings have implications for both tourism research and tourism marketing, indicating that destinations need to be marketed differently to long-haul tourists.

Kurzfassung: Previous studies have associated mu-opioid receptor ( OPRM1) genotype with pain and analgesia responses in postoperative and patient populations. This study investigates the role of catechol-O-methyltransferase ( COMT) and OPRM1 genotypes in acute postoperative pain scores, opioid use, and opioid-induced sedation after surgical procedures for orthopedic trauma in an otherwise healthy patient population. Verbal pain/sedation scores, opioid use, and physiologic responses in the immediate postoperative period were examined for association with genetic variants in Caucasians genotyped for OPRM1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) A118G and C17T and COMT SNPs. The OPRM1 A118G genotype was associated with patients’ postoperative Numerical Pain scale (NPS) ratings at 15 min in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) ( p = .01) and patients' sedation scores at 15 min in the PACU ( p = .02). COMT genotype (rs4818) was associated with opioid consumption in the first 45 min in the PACU ( p = .04). NPS ratings at 45 min were also higher in the group of patients with A/A genotype of rs4680 than in patients with the other two genotypes at this SNP ( p = .03). Our haplotype trend analysis identified a COMT haplotype “GCGG” significantly associated with NPS at 15 min ( p = .0013), amount of opioids consumed in the first 45 min ( p = .0024), and heart rate at 45 min in the PACU ( p = .017). The results indicate that genetic variations in COMT contribute to the acute postoperative pain and analgesia responses and physiologic responses in this group of otherwise healthy postoperative orthopedic trauma patients.

Kurzfassung: The assumption that lonely people are socially stigmatized was tested in an experiment using a 2 (Loneliness State) x 2 (Sex of Target Person) x 2 (Sex of Perceiver) between-subjects design. Results shored that the lonely target person was rated much more negatively than the nonlonely target person on measures of psychological attributes and interpersonal attraction and evaluation. Specifically, the lonely target person was perceived as lower in psychological adjustment, achievement/competence, and sociability/congeniali4y. The lonely person was less liked, was less preferred as a friend, and was rated as weaker more passive, less attractive, and less sincere. The negative evaluations were also found to vary according to the sex of the target person and the perceiver; the male lonely target person was more stigmatized than the female lonely target person, and female perceivers were more critical than male perceivers toward the lonely target person. The findings were replicated in a second experiment, which controlled for the confounding of gender with loneliness in the description of the target person in the first experiment. The results are discussed in relation to lonely people's difficulties in self-disclosure and in establishing social ties and support.

Kurzfassung: Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) can improve patients’ quality of life as complementary medical treatments. Part I of this 2-paper systematic review focused on the methods and results of cancer-related AAIs; Part II discusses the theories of the field’s investigators. Researchers cite animal personality, physical touch, physical movement, distraction, and increased human interaction as sources of observed positive outcomes. These mechanisms then group under theoretical frameworks such as the social support hypothesis or the human-animal bond concept to fully explain AAI in oncology. The cognitive activation theory of stress, the science of unitary human beings, and the self-object hypothesis are additional frameworks mentioned by some researchers. We also discuss concepts of neurobiological transduction connecting mechanisms to AAI benefits. Future researchers should base study design on theories with testable hypotheses and use consistent terminology to report results. This review aids progress toward a unified theoretical framework and toward more holistic cancer treatments.

Kurzfassung: Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) use human-animal interactions to positive effect in various contexts including cancer care. As the first installment of a 2-part series, this systematic literature review focuses on the research methods and quantitative results of AAI studies in oncology. We find methodological consistency in the use of canines as therapy animals, in the types of high-risk patients excluded from studies, and in the infection precautions taken with therapy animals throughout cancer wards. The investigated patient endpoints are not significantly affected by AAI, with the exceptions of improvements in oxygen consumption, quality of life, depression, mood, and satisfaction with therapy. The AAI field in oncology has progressed significantly since its inception and has great potential to positively affect future patient outcomes. To advance the field, future research should consistently improve the methodological design of studies, report data more completely, and focus more on the therapy animal’s well-being.

Kurzfassung: Techniques have been developed for obtaining reproducible lattice phonon spectra of barrier aluminum oxide anodic films. Changes in the lattice phonon spectrum as a result of 15-keV proton bombardment are interpreted in terms of the formation of Al-OH bonds. Polarization spectra of stripped and unstripped aluminum oxide films confirm the findings of Vedder and Vermilyea, particularly with respect to the origin of the 960 cm −1 band. The close similarity in the observed and calculated band shapes (using the theory of Berreman) leave little doubt that the 960 cm −1 absorption is due to a longitudinal optic mode of the aluminum oxide lattice.

Kurzfassung: Destination image is among the most frequently measured constructs in empirical survey research. Academic tourism researchers tend to use multi-category scales, often referring to them as “Likert scales,” while industry typically uses “pick-any” measures. But which leads to results that are more valid? Findings from a large-scale experimental study show that a “forced-choice full binary” format (where respondents have to tick “yes” and “no” for each destination-attribute combination) performs better than both current preferred formats in academic and applied studies.

Kurzfassung: This study retrospectively examined the association between cancer-related fatigue (CrF) and the number of falls during the last 12 months in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Methods: A multicenter, 1-time anonymous survey was conducted using analog and digital questionnaires. Sex-stratified multinomial logistic regression analysis was applied to investigate the association between CrF and number of falls. All analyses were adjusted for age, school education, body mass index, MPN subtype, and quality of life. Results: The final sample comprised 688 patients (mean age 57.4 ± 13.8, 62.4% women). The fall rate was 16.2% in women and 12.2% in men ( P = .153). There were no differences between women and men in terms of CrF between individuals with more than 1 fall, whereas women with 1 fall had a higher CrF compared to those without a fall (RRR = 1.019; 95% CI [1.002-1.039]), respectively. Conclusion: CrF increases the risk of falls in women with MPN. Physicians should evaluate and manage CrF symptoms and implement fall prevention strategies for those who are at increased risk. Further research is needed to better understand the effects of CrF on gait performance and associated fall risk.

Kurzfassung: Early identification of trauma patients at risk of developing acute traumatic coagulopathy is important in initiating appropriate, coagulopathy-focused treatment. A clinical acute traumatic coagulopathy prediction tool is a quick, simple method to evaluate risk. The COAST score was developed in Australia and we hypothesised that it could predict coagulopathy and bleeding-related adverse outcomes in other advanced trauma systems. We validated COAST on a single-centre cohort of trauma patients from a trauma centre in Belgium. Methods The COAST score was modified to suit available data; we used entrapment, blood pressure, temperature, major chest injury and abdominal injury to calculate the score. Acute traumatic coagulopathy was defined as international normalised ratio 〉 1.5 or activated partial thromboplastin time 〉 60 s upon arrival of the patient to the hospital. Data were extracted from the local trauma registry on patients that presented between 1 January and 31 December 2015. Results In all, 133 patients met the inclusion criteria ( 〉 16 years old, available COAST and outcome data) for analysis. The COAST score had an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.941 (95% CI: 0.884–0.999) and at COAST ≥3, it had 80% sensitivity and 96% specificity. The score also identified patients with higher rates of mortality, blood transfusion and emergent surgery. Conclusion This retrospective cohort study demonstrated the utility of the COAST score in identifying trauma patients who are likely to have bleeding-related poor outcomes. The early identification of these patients will facilitate timely, appropriate treatment for acute traumatic coagulopathy and minimise the risk of over-treatment. It can also be used to select patients with acute traumatic coagulopathy for trials involving therapeutic agents targeted at acute traumatic coagulopathy.
