Das Buch bringt Texte des 90-jährigen Romanciers aus den Jahren 1959 bis 2016, veröffentlicht in Tages- und Wochenzeitungen sowie Magazinen: Texte zum Zeitgeschehen, prägenden Ereignissen, Personen, zu Büchern, zum kulturellen Leben, darunter auch die umstrittene Rede von 1998 zur Verleihung des Friedenspreises an ihn. Man kann die Fülle und Breite der Beiträge nicht unter einen Nenner fassen. Seine frühe zum Teil extrem linke Position gab er auf, als sich Walser bemühte, sich abseits des allgemeinen Stroms zu halten. Die Texte machen verständlich, dass Walser trotz seines umfangreichen Werks nie zu einer Institution wie Günter Grass werden konnte. Auffallend ist sein Bekenntnis zur deutschen Einheit vor und nach der Wende. Dagegen stehen widersprüchliche Aussagen zur deutschen Vergangenheit und ihrem Nachwirken. Die Beiträge spiegeln deutsches Zeitgeschehen in seinen gegensätzlichen Wahrnehmungen, in ihrer Vielfalt von Ungereimtheiten und Widersprüchen. Darin liegt der Reiz des Buchs. Die Diskussion darüber wird nicht auf sich warten lassen.
