In: The Spread of Modern Industry to the Periphery since 1871, Chapter 5
Description: Industrial growth in Southeast Europe took off only after the Second World War, even though modern manufacturing had started at the very end of the nineteenth century. This chapter shows that before 1945 the Balkans had already undergone fundamental modernization, making rapid industrialization possible after the Second World War. Furthermore, the industrial take-off during 1950–75 occurred under very different economic systems. By the mid-1970s, all Southeast European countries seemed to be on the way to becoming mature, diversified industrial economies. However, quite the opposite occurred. Modern manufacturing across Southeast Europe plunged into crisis, which became full de-industrialization during the 1990s. Finally, the chapter offers an explanation for why all industrialization efforts in the region ultimately failed, based on the interaction between endogenous factors, such as wrong strategic decisions taken by domestic elites, and exogenous factors, such as adverse global developments.

In: Securing the Internet of Things, Chapter 62, pp.1368-1387
Description: The increasing number of connected devices which use Internet of Things (IoT) technology and variety of associated services is a real challenge to interoperability. There is a need of an abstraction layer which hides the technology heterogeneity. The paper presents an approach to data modeling in the domain of home energy saving which extends existing solutions with context-ware concepts and relationships. Requirements to data annotation are identified by use cases. Problem-solving principle is applied to data annotation which defines the vocabulary related to a certain task or activities. An observation and actuation models which show how data annotation works are proposed and formally verified. As a proof of concept, the server model includes web services that illustrate the usage of the proposed data annotation. The potential of home appliance power control is estimated.

In: 2012 Next Generation Experiments to Measure the Neutron Lifetime Workshop, 2014, pp.145-154
Description: This paper describes a new magnetic trap for ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) made from a 1.2m long Halbach-octupole array of permanent magnets with an inner bore radius of 47mm combined with an assembly of superconducting end coils and bias field solenoid. The use of the trap in a vertical, magneto-gravitational and a horizontal setup are compared in terms of the effective volume and ability to control key systematic effects that need to be addressed in high precision neutron lifetime measurements.

Description: Cancer is an extremely complex and heterogeneous disease that reflects the genetic as well as protein changes within a cell. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to tumour formation, disease progression, and cancer cell migration and metastasis has been a major challenge in cancer research for many years. As a result, there are currently many effective therapies for the early detection and diagnosis of cancer; however cancer still remains a major cause of death and disease. Monitoring the protein expression pattern in clinical samples by proteomics technologies offers opportunities to discover potentially new biomarkers for early detection and diagnosis of cancer. In this chapter we will describe protocols for the preparation of samples for proteomic analysis from in vitro cancer cell line models, specifically on the preparation of proteins from whole cell lysates and proteins secreted into the culture media (i.e. conditioned media). We will also introduce protocols for the proteomic analysis of in vivo clinical samples from cancer patients using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue and biological fluids such as saliva and serum.

Description: Traditional reductionist approaches play a crucial role in our understanding of biology and medicine, but they cannot explain the full complexity of biological phenomena and human disease. Systems biology combines recent high-throughput profiling technologies—such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics—with computational modeling to capture, summarize, and understand this complexity. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of these experimental profiling technologies and computational modeling approaches. Several case studies illustrate how system approaches are already effectively used in toxicology assessment, drug development, diagnostics, and personalized medicine. Overall, this article provides the foundations to further integrate systems biology approaches into biomedical research.

Description: Combining antibody coated magnetic bead affinity purification as a separation tool with mass spectrometry as a protein identification tool has been a powerful method to determine the composition of interacting proteins and protein complexes. Receptor proteins and insoluble complexes offer added challenges, as they may contain hydrophobic membrane proteins. When strong detergents such as SDS are required to release the complexes from the magnetic beads or prevent their aggregation and precipitation, the subsequent required removal of anionic detergents appears to cause significant sample losses prior to MS analysis. We describe a procedure in which protein denaturation and trypsin digestion are performed directly on the affinity bound complex on the magnetic beads, circumventing detergents and reducing sample loss prior to LC/MS/MS analysis.

In: Marine Surface Films: Chemical Characteristics, Influence on Air-Sea Interactions and Remote Sensing, pp.299-313
Description: This paper presents the results of the oil spill observations using Almaz-1 and ERS-1 SAR images collected in the Norwegian Sea during the Dedicated Oil Spill Experiment (DOSE-91) in 1991. Three artificial spills were released from a vessel in August 1991 and data on sea and weather conditions near the test area were determined. The analysis of the acquired SAR images shows that the reduction of the backscatter from oil-covered sea surface attained values of up to 10–15 dB. For the first time an effect of an intensification of wind waves both within the area of the spill and at the windward edge of the oil spill, expressed as a magnification of the SAR image brightness, was detected. The increase in relative backscatter power was up to 2.0 dB. It is concluded that both Almaz-1 and ERS-1 SARs are valuable tools for oil spill detection and localisation, but that the detectability essentially depended on wind speed, sea state and age of spills.
