Description: Characters recognition in natural images is a challenging problem, asit involves segmenting characters of various colours on various background. Inthis article, we present a method for segmenting images that use a colour percep-tion graph. Our algorithm is inspired by graph cut segmentation techniques andit use an edge detection technique for filtering the graph before the graph-cut aswell as merging segments as a final step. We also present both qualitative andquantitative results, which show that our algorithm perform at slightly better andfaster to a state of the art algorithm.

Description: Skeletonisation is a key process in character recognition in natural images. Under the assumption that a character is made of a stroke of uniform colour, with small variation in thickness, the process of recognising characters can be decomposed in the three steps. First the image is segmented, then each segment is transformed into a set of connected strokes (skeletonisation), which are then abstracted in a descriptor that can be used to recognise the character. The main issue with skeletonisation is the sensitivity with noise, and especially, the presence of holes in the masks. In this article, a new method for the extraction of strokes is presented, which address the problem of holes in the mask and does not use any parameters.

Description: Urban heat islands (UHIs) can have negative effects on cities. Under tropical climate and for large and high-dense mega cities like Singapore the elevated temperature levels yield to higher energy consumption for cooling, reduced outdoor thermal comfort, and a lowered quality of urban living in general. While modeling and simulation of UHIs has been done successfully for the temperate zone and cities of either dominantly flat roof-scape (i.e. in Europe) or repetitive urban layout (in the U.S.), the same approach cannot be applied to Singapore. Three-dimensional cellular automata (3D-CA) are here proposed as means to model the manifold vertical features, which are not sufficiently taken into account with current state-of-the-art methods: the heterogeneous high-rise landscape and convection as a major heat rejection mechanism. As we demonstrate 3D-CA enable a new approach of UHI modeling where traditional urban microclimate models fail and computational fluid dynamics are not applicable due to the large scale.

Description: The new BES III detector at BEPCII collected 106 million ψ ̗ and about 226 million J/ψ events in 2009. Results based on these samples are reported, including branching ratios for χX cJ  → π 0 π 0 ,ηη, 4π 0 , γyV and VV , where V is a ρ, ω, or Φ as well as first measurements of the branching ratios for ψ → γ 0 h c and h c  → γη c and measurements of the mass and width of the h c . Results in hadron spectroscopy include the confirmation of the pp̄ threshold enhancement in J/ψ→γpp̄ and confirmation of the X(1835) in J/ψ→γη ̗ π + π −

Description: Compositions of thermally sprayed hardmetal coatings for wear protection are based on the hard materials WC and Cr 3 C 2 with Co and Ni as the most important binders, which are often alloyed with Cr. There are a few commercial compositions containing WC and Cr 3 C 2 together, which have a high potential for the improvement of coating properties, in particular for service in corrosive environments and high temperature applications. However, the combined application of WC and Cr 3 C 2 in the coating compositions leads to very complex reactions between these components both during feedstock powder preparation and the spray process. This contribution summarizes the knowledge about the interactions of WC and Cr 3 C 2 for the most important commercially available compositions: WC-10Co-4Cr, WC-20‘CrC’-7Ni, 45Cr 3 C 2 - 37WC-18NiCo. These three compositions show remarkable differences of the interaction between WC and Cr 3 C 2 and the coating properties.

Description: In order to increase the reach of the astrophysical searches, various sources of instrumental and environmental noise must be identified and ameliorated. Here we discuss efforts to understand the origin of noise manifested as short-duration bursts (glitches) and/or range-impacting features at LIGO Hanford. Several examples found at LIGO Hanford Observatory in O1 and O2 were identified including glitches due to an air compressor, ringing phone, airplanes, and an incorrect servo setting, and a decrease in detector sensitivity due to truck traffic.
