    Description: Conventional vending machines require users to press buttons and respond to visual cues. This makes them less accessible to some users such as the blind. NuiVend resolves this issue by integrating natural voice commands and gesture interactions into a vending machine, thereby creating many alternative, natural, and more user-friendly ways of interaction. In this paper, we will discuss NuiVend's use of a variety of technologies. Such as: Microsoft Kinect, various Microsoft Cognitive API services, relay and sensor boards, as well as the overall logic of the control software. Finally, we discuss potential improvements to NuiVend as well as Microsoft Language Understanding Intelligent Service (LUIS) techniques that can be applied to many other future NUI based projects.

    Description: Holistically understanding the impact of inhomogeneous and time dependent indoor climatic effects on human beings requires the investigation of associated dynamic human thermoregulatory processes and their complex correlations. In this context several mathematical model approaches have been proposed in literature, which generally account for a standard human being of male gender. The research approach in this paper therefore focuses on the adaptation and parametrization of the physiological part of a virtual human thermoregulatory system in order to represent different morphological groups of people. In this regard, the skin surface represents the interface between the human body and its thermal surrounding and reflects the activity of the human thermoregulatory system through changing skin surface temperatures. Such temperatures are further used as input parameters for local and global thermal comfort prediction modeling.

    Description: Nowadays technical applications require very small components which leads to the question of how to handle fatigue strength data gained from tests carried out on specimen which are even larger than the component itself. Previous high-cycle-fatigue (HCF) tests have outlined the negative influence of increasing “risk volumes” due to enlargement of the specimen size. Additional to the effect of “risk volumes” the influence of stress gradient may not be neglected as the gradient changes as well due to the enlargement of the specimen size. Especially thin profiles could be affected by high stress gradients which results in high and low stress loaded profile areas. The fatigue strength of an hourglass shaped specimen with a standardized diameter of 7.5 mm tends to have higher fatigue strength than a specimen with a larger diameter. In this work rotating bending tests were carried out on specimens with a diameter of 4 and 7.5 mm. Lifetime simulations with different specimen diameters (D2.5, D4 and D7.5) were carried out by a common simulation tool FEMFAT and simultaneous testing of D4 and D7.5 specimens was performed to compare the results. An outlook is given on how such influences can be estimated and an appropriate method can be derived for damage calculations.

    Description: The fatigue strength of the casted aluminum alloy AlSi7Cu0.5Mg T6W is investigated, whereat different eutectic modifiers, Sr and Na, are used for the two fatigue testing series. The tested specimens are extracted from three different locations of casted cylinder heads. The high-cycle fatigue testing is executed with cylindrical specimens at a load ratio of R = -1. The investigations are supported by CT-scans of the specimens and a comprehensive fractographic analysis. The obtained micro pore sizes from CT-scans are compared with thus of the fractography. It is shown that the maximum micro pore sizes near the surface of both examinations are comparable. The database is statistically evaluated using extremal distribution based functions. To assess the fatigue strength of the imperfected specimen, the simplified crack propagation based approach according to is applied. The cumulative distribution function matches well to the experimental results. This methodology features the incorporation of extremal micro pore sizes into finite life fatigue strength.

    Description: In parallel cell circuits within Lithium-ion home storage systems, the components of the circuit have an enormous influence on the load distribution and as consequence on the battery lifetime. Quality spreads within a batch of cells exist also as deviation in the connection quality. This paper presents the impacts of the system components on the load distribution and the ageing in parallel-connected circuits for exemplary module designs of commercial available home storage systems. Experimental and simulated studies show high deviations between the performances and lifetimes of several systems due to the circuit design.

    Description: The Planck mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) is designed to image the anisotropies of the Cosmic Background Radiation Field over the whole sky. To achieve this aim, sophisticated reflectors are used as part of the Planck telescope receiving system. The system consists of secondary and primary reflectors which are sections of two different ellipsoids of revolution with mean diameters of 1 and 1.6 meters. Deformations of the reflectors which influence the optical parameters and the gain of receiving signals are investigated in vacuum and at very low temperatures. For this investigation, among the various high accuracy measurement techniques, photogrammetry was selected. With respect to the photogrammetric measurements, special considerations had to be taken into account in design steps, measurement arrangement and data processing to achieve very high accuracies. The determinability of additional parameters of the camera under the given network configuration, datum definition, reliability and precision issues as well as workspace limits and propagating errors from different sources are considered. We have designed an optimal photogrammetric network by heuristic simulation for the flight model of the primary and the secondary reflectors with relative precisions better than 1:1000’000 and 1:400’000 to achieve the requested accuracies. A least squares best fit ellipsoid method was developed to determine the optical parameters of the reflectors. In this paper we will report about the procedures, the network design and the results of real measurements.

    Description: A key difference between traditional humanities research and the emerging field of digital humanities is that the latter aims to complement qualitative methods with quantitative data. In linguistics, this means the use of large corpora of text, which are usually annotated automatically using natural language processing tools. However, these tools do not exist for historical texts, so scholars have to work with unannotated data. We have developed a system for systematic, iterative exploration and annotation of historical text corpora, which relies on an XML database (BaseX) and in particular on the Full Text and Update facilities of XQuery.

    Description: In this paper we report on remote photoacoustic imaging using an interferometric technique. By utilizing a two-wave mixing interferometer ultrasonic displacements are measured without any physical contact to the sample. This technique allows measurement of the displacements also on rough surfaces. Mixing a plane reference beam with the speckled beam originating from the sample surface is done in a Bi12SiO20 photorefractive crystal. After data acquisition the structure of the specimen is reconstructed using a Fourier-domain synthetic focusing aperture technique. We show three-dimensional imaging on tissue-mimicking phantoms and biological samples. Furthermore, we show remote photoacoustic measurements on a human forearm in-vivo.
