Ziel der Arbeit war, Ciceros Aratea von Grund auf neu zu beleuchten und ihre Textgeschichte bis heute zu untersuchen, da ihr viele sachliche Fehler attestiert wurden. Dazu war es nötig, zu entscheiden, wie die stark fragmentarischen Aratea bis heute gelesen wurden. Über einen weiten Zeitraum (ca. 1600-1900), der editorisch und wirkungsgeschichtlich in hohem Maße relevant ist, wurden Ciceros Aratea mit den Ergänzungen des Hugo Grotius (Hugo de Groot) aus dessen Syntagma Arateorum (Leyden 1600) gelesen. Geboten wird also eine ganzheitliche Textgrundlage, in der sowohl das Cicero-Original nach den aktuellsten Ausgaben textkritisch ediert wird, aber auch erstmal eine textkritische Edition zu den Grotius-Ergänzungen vorliegt. Sowohl strukturell als auch optisch werden beide Autoren scharf voneinander getrennt, um klassischen und neulateinischen Philologen die Arbeit zu erleichtern. Sämtliche Verse werden im Hinblick auf Vorbilder und Stilistik, wo es besonders erscheint auch auf Metrik und Nachwirkung untersucht; zudem werden sie sachlich erklärt und maßgeblich die Cicero-Verse in den römischen Kontext seiner Zeit eingeordnet. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass viele sachliche Fehler Ciceros vor dem Hintergrund erklärt werden können, dass er nicht das griechische Original nur übersetzt hat, sondern die Thematik für den römischen Kontext seiner Zeit erschlossen hat, was sich an eigenen Fachbegriffen und didaktischer Methodik zeigt. Neben frühen Stilblüten Ciceros lässt sich nicht nur seine Pionier-Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der hexametrischen Dichtung zeigen, sondern auch ein wirklich brauchbares Exemplar zeitgenössischer didaktischer Literatur erkennen. Die Grotius-Supplemente fügen sich dabei oft so organisch ein, dass sie den Text wie ein Kontinuum wirken lassen, der auch dem interessierten philologischen Laien durch sprachliche und sachliche Erklärungen zugänglich gemacht werden soll.
