De 1378 à 1417, au défi du Grand Schisme d’Occident, la Chrétienté latine vacille sous les coups de papes rivaux. Ce dérèglement de l'Eglise Romaine contraint l'Occident, une société d'ordres hétéronome, a�� repenser son fonctionnement. En Gascogne, un espace-frontière, la diversité des souverainetés rend possible les engagements les plus extrêmes. Pour en rendre compte, j'ai privilégié trois approches. Une analyse phénoménologique situe l'engagement des individus dans un système de lieux, de groupements humains et de mots. L'Eglise dépend-elle de la papauté ? Jusqu'à quel point les contemporains peuvent-ils critiquer une société d'ordres hétéronome ? Quelles incidences le schisme a-t-il dans leur vie ? Ces questions convergent vers la réalisation d'un modèle conceptuel des données, qui, une fois implémenté et informé, permet d'aborder la discussion historique. Cette discussion caractérise l'engagement des Gascons. Deux principales césures chronologiques structurent la discussion : l'abandon de campagnes militaires en 1392 et la convocation de conciles en 1408. De 1378 à 1392, un long processus décennal préside à la formation d'obédiences concurrentes. De 1393 à 1408, l'Occident débat de la meilleure voie pour l'union : la fracture idéologique entre Gascons apparaît alors au grand jour. Les chemins de l'union, du concile de Pise, en 1409, à l'abjuration du comte Jean IV d'Armagnac, en 1430, imposent, avec difficulté, une solution politique au détriment d'une vérité judiciaire. L'engagement individuel apparaît comme un équilibre instable tenant à l'ancrage spatial, aux affiliations partisanes et à la force des idées. From 1378 to 1417, faced with the Western Great Schism, the Latin Christendom fell apart under the blows of rival popes. This imbalance in the Roman Church forced the West, a heteronomous society of orders, to rethink its functioning. In Gascony, a space of frontiers, the various sovereignties made the most extreme commitments possible. In order to study these commitments, I have favoured three approaches. A phenomenological analysis sets individual commitments in a system of places, of human gatherings and of words. Did the Church depend on the papacy? To what extent could contemporaries criticize a heteronomous society of orders? How did the Great Schism affect their lives? These questions lead to the making of a conceptual data model, which, once implemented and filled with the adequate data, opens the way to the historical dissertation. This dissertation endeavours to characterise the commitments of Gascons. Two main political changes structure the dissertation: the end of military campaigns in 1392 and the actual implementation of an international policy in 1408. Between 1378 and 1392, a long decennial process presided over the formation of rival obediences. Between 1393 and 1408, the West discussed the best way of union: the ideological gap between Gascons became obvious. The paths leading to the union, from the council of Pisa, in 1409, to the abjuration of John IV, count of Armagnac, in 1430, imposed a political solution to the detriment of a judiciary truth. The individual commitment turns out to be an unstable balance relying on the spatial anchorage, the biased affiliations and the strength of ideas.
