Content: Over There -- The Tombstone Bonus -- A Petition in Boots -- Mobilizing a Bonus Army -- An Army of Occupation -- Hooverville, D.C. -- The Death March -- Tanks in the Streets -- The Long Morning After -- The Return of the Bonus Army -- Labor Day Hurricane -- V-Day for the Veterans -- Epilogue: The GI Bill-Legacy of the Bonus Army.
Content: "Forty-five thousand World War I veterans invaded President Herbert Hoover's Washington D.C. in the Depression summer of 1932 demanding payment of the bonus they had been promised eight years earlier for their wartime service. The "bonus bill" was defeated in the Senate, and the Army, led by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Douglas MacArthur, routed the invading bonus army with tanks on the streets of Washington. The Bonus Army by Paul Dickson and Thomas B. Allen, which garnered fabulous reviews when first published in 2004, is based on exhaustive research including interviews with the last surviving witnesses from 1932. As Dickson and Allen make clear the summer of the 1932 Bonus Army ultimately proved to play a crucial role in American history as it paved the way for the passage, in 1944, of the GI Bill of Rights, legislation which transformed American society and more than anything else created the American middle class of the postwar years"--

Series Statement: More treasures from American film archives 1894-1931 : 50 films ; [Medienkombination] [1]
Content: The critically acclaimed MORE TREASURES FROM AMERICAN FILM ARCHIVES, 1894-1931 showcases the astonishing creative range and vitality of American motion pictures in their first four decades through examples preserved by the nation's leading silent-film archives. The 3-DVD box set, with 200-page book, covers the years from 1894 through 1931, when the motion pictures grew from a peepshow curio to the nation's fourth largest industry. This is the period from which fewest American films survive. The programs presents 50 films and 6 previews never before available on good-quality video, from the earliest surviving sound film, produced in 1894 by Thomas Edison's laboratory, to A Bronx Morning (1931), a avant-garde documentary by Jay Leyda. Among the rare works are Clash of the Wolves starring the original Rin-Tin-Tin, the first surviving film of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Ernst Lubitsch's Lady Windermere's Fan, kinetoscopes of Annie Oakley and Thomas Edison, a sing-along with Ko-Ko the Clown, educational shorts on making light bulbs and telephone etiquette, the earliest film of a Martha Graham dance, a cartoon satire on prohibition by Gregory La Cava, and footage of the rural South by novelist Zora Neale Hurston. All films are mastered from the best surviving source material. Content: Made with the full cooperation of the U.S. military, the beautifully filmed Another Day in Paradise simultaneously honors military service while expressing very candid reservations about war and the sacrifices required for military life. Produced by Mel Gibson̷s Icon production company, filmmaker Deborah Dickson̷s documentary is an off-shoot from Carrier, a 10-part PBS documentary series that chronicled life aboard the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. While that series was broader in scope, the ironically titled Another Day in Paradise offers a more intimately focused portrait of three sailors aboard the Nimitz for a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf. Being away from their families takes its toll on fighter pilot Lt. Doug Booher, Sergeant Randy Brock (a young father-to-be whose son is born while he̷s away), and ordnanceman Chris Altice (who learns that his girlfriend is pregnant while he̷s still in the process of mapping out his future). The film (which looks particularly stunning in the Blu-ray version) interweaves these personal histories with scenes illustrating the rhythms and responsibilities of daily life on an aircraft carrier, combining gung-ho Top Gun machismo with a clear-eyed acknowledgment that carrier service involves a lot of dull, repetitive routine. In this atmosphere of regimented discipline, the appeal and romance of military service shines through, along with the psychological anguish of familial separation, personal sacrifice, and the uncertainty of potential battles. Paradoxically, by presenting the downsides of military service while also honoring its timeless appeal, Another Day in Paradise may be the most honest recruitment film ever made, even if that was surely not its intention. Recommended. (J. Shannon, Video Librarian)
