Am Ende haben Merles Eltern verstanden, dass es Not tut, ihrer Tochter mehr Freiheit zu lassen - und mehr Verantwortung für sich selbst und das Zusammenleben in der Familie zuzumuten. Flott erzählt, garniert mit einer zarten Liebesgeschichte (Jonny wird Merles 1. Liebe) geht es hier um die Emanzipation einer Behinderten, die am Ende in die Lage kommt, unter Bewusstwerdung der eigenen Stärken selbstbestimmter zu leben. Die besondere Stärke dieses Jugendromans liegt in seiner sinnlichen Erzählweise, die sich an den geschärften Sinneswahrnehmungen einer Blinden orientiert. Leider rutscht die Erzählung gegen Ende in so manche Sentimentalität ab. Trotz dieser Einschränkung ergänzend zu Friedrich Ani: "Wie Licht schmeckt" (BA 5/02) empfohlen.. - Seit 5 Jahren ist Merle blind, als sie die - sehenden - Geschwister Jonny und Undine kennenlernt.
