Solidarität ist ein alter und traditionsreicher Begriff, mit vielfältigen Wurzeln und Traditionen. Solche Solidarität hat eine Geschichte, aber sie steht im Zwielicht, weil sie stets gefährdet und brüchig ist. Solidarität mit oder unter Fremden erscheint nicht weniger problematisch. Die Existenz eines Fremden ist zwar etwas Alltägliches und die Begegnung mit Fremden der Normalfall, seit sich Kulturen gebildet haben. Aber die Gegenwart zeigt, dass nicht nur die Fremden, sondern etwas Fremdes im Netz der Verständigung hängen bleibt, dass sich Kontraste zwischen Eigenem und Fremdem zu einer Front ausbilden können. Diese Begegnungen mit dem Fremden sollen in der vorliegenden Monographie zur Sprache kommen. Den vielleicht unerkannten, unausgeschöpften Quellen der europäischen Geschichte sollen Einsichten entnommen werden, wie diese Fronten aufzuweichen sind. Und darüber hinaus: wie ein Standpunkt der europäischen Selbstbewusstwerdung gewonnen werden kann, der in unübersichtlichen Zeiten etwas Verbindliches bietet.
