Abstract:
The river Traisen is one of the biggest tributaries of the river Danube in Lower Austria. During the construction of the Danube hydro power plant of Altenwörth, the mouth of the river Traisen was relocated about 7.5 km downstream. This monotonously/heavily regulated river stretch runs through the Natura 2000 site “Tullnerfelder Donauauen”, Austria’s largest enclosed wetlands. During the LIFE+ project an approx. 10 km long, meandering river segment was built, which is allowed to develop dynamically during floodwater situations. Approx. 30 ha of typical river habitats were created, which help to achieve the “good ecological potential” in the adjacent water body of river Danube (the water reservoir of the Danube hydro power plant Greifenstein). Another priority of the project was to re-connect the river Traisen to the river Danube and its’ fish population. The adjacent area was lowered to create about 60 ha of floodplain habitats, especially silver willow riparian forest, typical for the Natura 2000 site. The large-scale material removal during the establishment of the riverbed and its adjacent floodplain resulted in a material surplus of approx. 1.5 Mio. m 3 . Part of the gravel was used for sediment management downstream the Danube hydro power plant “Wien-Freudenau”. Most of the gravel was transported on the Danube inland waterway. The project is the largest LIFE+ nature project in Austria, concerning planning area and construction volume either. It is also one of the largest revitalization projects in Central Europe. The project has started in 2013 and the construction has finished in 2016. First monitoring results show significant improvements of the ecological conditions.
