Abstract:
Can one say that attic vases have been chosen by the importing countries according to their decoration ? The history of researches in the field of greek ceramics and ancient trade reveals that such a conceptual approach appeared only very recently. This paper tries to explain why and to show under which conditions, and to what extent, this hypothesis can be accepted. It seems that people exported vases, rather than images ; the decoration, subject to various reinterpretations, remains secondary in the trade-pattern.
