Content: Botnets are a major concern for IoT devices deployed on a large scale. Botnets not only can discover new vulnerabledevices but are also proficient in injecting malware into the target devices. The estimated traffic generated by suchbotnets is of the order of Tbps and the attacks cost billions of dollars to the global economy every year. This dissertation investigates the problem of detecting botnet attacks on IoT devices and proposes a novel, completebotnet detection framework that makes use of concepts in the immune system. The proposed framework consists of``intelligent'' agents that can ``learn'' new patterns with minimal or no supervision. It provides innate and adaptivedetection on the principles similar to the human immune response and performs botnet detection at different levelsknown as lines of defence. Each line of defence is composed of one or more detection agents that are composed ofdifferent types of artificial neural networks. The innate detection mechanism is responsible to detect botnets that arenot known yet and provides a general detection and works on the principles of biological cell division process. Theadaptive detection mechanism makes use of accurate and low-latency neural networks that are trained for specificbehaviours. The core of adaptive detection is composed of a novel system inspired by Hematopoietic Stem cells.Experiments are conducted by making use of IoT traffic data from commercially available IoT devices infected with themost popular open-source botnets. Evaluation results demonstrate the power and capabilities of this framework forefficient botnet detection producing high accuracy, low latency and low false detection rate. This dissertation makes three major contributions to the subject domain including (a) a comprehensive botnetdetection framework that can be extended towards general anomalies; (b) an efficient unsupervised binaryclassification detector for botnets that can be extended towards multiclass classification and (c) an automated neuralnetwork structure selection mechanism that removes the need to devise the number of hidden layers and thecontained neurons and can guide the learning process without specifying the number of epochs and is able toautomatically prune the network as needed.

; We evaluated the growth promotion potential and colonization capacity of five endophytic bacterial strains for enhancing growth and yield of different maize cultivars under axenic and natural soil conditions. We found that the inoculant strains had the potential to improve maize seedling growth under axenic conditions. In the containment trial, FD17 inoculation significantly increased plant biomass and grain yield up to 39 and 42%, respectively, as compared to the un-inoculated control. We confirmed that strain FD17 is efficiently colonizes the rhizosphere, roots and stems of maize plant. Based on rigorous testing Enterobacter sp. FD17 showed highest potential to promote growth and health of maize grown under natural soil conditions. The second part of the study aimed to assess the drought stress resilience of maize and wheat through endophytic colonization by B. phytofirmans PsJN and Enterobacter sp. FD17 in the pot and field. Bacterial inoculation minimized the drought stress-imposed effects significantly increasing shoot biomass, root biomass, relative water content, photosynthesis and efficiency of PSII in the pot trial. The inoculant strains efficiently colonized maize seedlings and were recovered from roots, shoots and leaves of both irrigated and stressed plants. In the field, the plants were exposed to drought stress at tillering and flowering growth stage by skipping the respective irrigation. Inoculation increased grain yield up to 21 and 18%, respectively, at both stages over the control. These studies suggested that endophytic bacteria could be efficiently used to reduce the effects of drought stress on growth and yield of maize and wheat. In the third phase of study, we evaluated the L-TRP-dependent response of PsJN inoculation to maize growth and auxin biosynthesis under pot conditions. PsJN inoculation supplemented with L-TRP (10-5 M) significantly increased root and shoot biomass up to 62 and 55%, respectively, compared to control. The inoculant strain colonized more efficiently maize seedlings in the presence of exogenously applied L-TRP. The results imply that L-TRP-derived IAA biosynthesis in the rhizosphere by PsJN inoculation could be a useful approach for improving the growth and yield of maize. ; submitted by: Muhammad Naveed ; Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des Verfassers ; Zsfassung in dt.
