Abstract: The diaries of Galeazzo Ciano, Italy’s Foreign Minister between 1936 and 1943 and Benito Mussolini’s son-in-law, are among the most important testimonials of the Fascist period. To this day, however, no critical edition which would satisfy scientific standards is available for this indisputably important source. On the contrary: A detailed comparison of the published editions with the original photographs of the diaries makes clear how inexact and erroneous the existing publications are. For this reason it is necessary to caution against all too uncritical use of the published versions of the diaries. Only a laborious critical edition will make it possible to reliably prepare one of the most important personal documents of the Fascist period for research. Even the diaries themselves contain contradictions which have so far been overlooked or pushed aside as unimportant. To demonstrate these problems, passages of the diary are compared to other memoirs and archival sources. The account of the spectacular history of the diaries from their origin to their publication as well as the analysis of the different interests of all the parties involved – such as Galeazzo Ciano, his wife Edda Ciano and the American intelligence service – provides first indications as to how these inconsistencies may be explained.
