Abstract: 'Wohnen ist ein menschliches Grundbedürfnis und die Wohnung stellt den zentralen räumlichen Lebensmittelpunkt im wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Sinne dar. Die Wohnungsmärkte, die die Nachfrage der Bevölkerung nach Wohnraum befriedigen, waren in der ehemaligen BRD und DDR unterschiedlich strukturiert. In der ehemaligen DDR existierte kein Wohnungsmarkt im westlichen Sinne, sondern eine Politik der Wohnungsversorgung, die zentralstaatlich gesteuert wurde, wobei der Staat den Wohnungsbau und die Wohnungsmieten fast vollständig subventionierte. Seit der Vereinigung hat sich der Wohnungsmarkt in den fünf neuen Bundesländern rasant verändert. Bis heute resultiert aus dem Transformationsprozeß in den neuen Bundesländern allerdings noch keine Angleichung an westdeutsche Wohnverhältnisse. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht die Unterschiede in den objektiven Wohnbedingungen und der subjektiv wahrgenommenen Wohnqualität zwischen den alten und neuen Bundesländern und nimmt damit eine Bestandsau
