Der junge Mann ist Johann Sebastian Bach. Als Sohn eines ungarischen Hofmusikus im thüringischen Eisenach geboren, wuchs BAch über seine Epoche hinaus und bleibt doch verhängnisvoll in ihr verwurzelt. Seine Überlegenheit und sein freies Spiel rief bei Zeitgenossen gleichermaßen Begeisterung, aber auch Verwirrung und Neid hervor. Immer wieder sah BAch sich in seinem Schaffendrang und Kunstanspruch beschränkt, galt aber dennoch als lebensfroh und sinnesfreudig.Die Produktion besticht vor allem durch ihr hochkarätiges internationales Schauspielerensemble, angeführt von Ulrich Thein, der in der Titelrolle - und ohne Double an den Instrumenten - glänzt. Auch akustisch ist der Film ein Genuss: Zwei Drittel der Musik sind eigens produzerte Neuaufnahmen, darunter seine populärsten Stücke wi die Toccata d-Moll für die Orgel, das Weihnachtssoratorium, die Matthäuspassion und zahlreiche Ausschnitte aus Kantaten, Messen und Konzerten mit den besten Interpreten der Bachschen Musik."
