Die in den Jahren 1966 und 1967 durchgeführten Untersuchungen der Feinwurzeln von Pinus sylvestris wurden an 4 m langen und 2 m tiefen Bodengruben vorgenommen. Bedingt durch die Bestandesauswahl gelten die hier vorgestellten Ergebnisse für Kiefern der Altersspanne von 55 bis 60 Jahren. Alle Versuchsflächen sind ungedüngt, annähernd voll bestockt und gut gepflegt. Die ermittelten, beträchtlichen Unterschiede in der Stammzahl pro ha und die davon abhängige Feindurchwurzelung sind demnach überwiegend auf die waldbauliche Behandlung zurückzuführen. Eine veränderte Feinwurzelausbildung einer einzelnen Kiefer in Abhängigkeit vom Ernährungszustand lässt sich in einem nach damaligen ertragskundlichen Durchforstungsgrundsätzen behandelten Kiefernbestand nicht nachweisen. Nach diesen Untersuchungen kann weiterhin eine Feinwurzelhäufung in humosen Oberböden und in Lehmschichten als gesichert gelten. Dabei geht die Ausbildung eines 2. Wurzelstockwerke im Tieflehm auch mit einer absoluten Erhöhung der Feinwurzeln einher. Zur Erklärung des Feinwurzelwachstums der Kiefer kann nach diesen Kartierungen davon ausgegangen werden, dass sich komplexe Anreize zur Feindurchwurzelung aus dem Nährstoffangebot der Böden, günstiger Wasserversorgung und ausreichender Bodendurchlüftung ergeben.
