    In: Geodiversitas, 2011, Vol.33(3), p.411-449
Description: Ivanov M. & Bhme M. 2011. Snakes from Griesbeckerzell (Langhian, Early Badenian), North Alpine Foreland Basin (Germany), with comments on the evolution of snake faunas in Central Europe during the Miocene Climatic Optimum. Geodiversitas 33 (3): 411-449. Two fossil-bearing levels at Griesbeckerzell (the central part of the North Alpine Foreland Basin; Early Badenian, Mittlere Serie of the Upper Freshwater Molasse) have produced a rich reptile fauna that includes a large number of snakes, i.e. Grisbeckerzell lb (OSM E, 15.014.9 Ma): Boidae: Python sp.; Colubridae: Coluber cf. caspioides; Vipendae: Vipera sp. (oriental vipers group) or Daboia sp.; Griesbeckerzell la (beginning of unit OSM F, 14.77 Ma): Boidae: Bavarioboa aff. hermi, cf. Bavarioboa sp., Python sp.; Colubridae: Coluber cf. caspioides, Coluber hungaricus, Coluber sp., Texasophis cf. meint, Natrix sp.; Elapidae: Micrurus cf. gallicus; Viperidae: Vipera sp. (Oriental vipers group), Vipera sp. (European vipers group; Vipera aspis complex). The Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) is documented in central Europe by the presence of highly thermophilous reptile taxa, including Python sp., which is the most thermophilous reptile known from the European Neogene. The presence of Python sp. in Griesbeckerzell 1 a pushes up the last appearance date (LAD) of this large Booidea in central Europe into the early Middle Miocene. The dramatic decrease in temperatures after 14.0 Ma (i.e. below 16C in mean annual air temperature) was most probably responsible for the extinction of the European non-Erycinae Booidea, regardless of food competition. The genus Bavarioboa (Bavarioboa aff. hermi) and possibly Coluber caspioides (Coluber cf. caspioides) both have their LADs in Griesbeckerzell la; Coluber hungaricus probably represents the earliest appearance (FAD) of this colubrid snake. Palaeoclimatic analyses of the herpetofauna indicate for both Griesbeckerzell levels humid conditions of between 750 and 1 025 mm mean annual precipitation. Temperature estimates combined with palaeobotanical data indicate a warm, subtropical climate with mean annual temperatures of 18.6 to 20.8C, cold month temperatures with 12.6 to 13.3C, and warm month temperatures with 25.1 to 28.1C.

Description: displays humidity‐induced phase transitions from a hexagonal columnar structure to a bicontinuous cubic phase. The mesophases can be frozen by photopolymerization of acrylic end‐groups resulting in free‐standing membranes with different topology of ionic nanochannels. The obtained membranes with a well‐ordered ionic channel structure hold promise for applications in separation and catalysis.

Description: Magnetic field dependence of long-lived spin states (LLSs) of the -CH 2 protons of aromatic amino acids was studied. LLSs are spin states, which are immune to dipolar relaxation, thus having lifetimes far exceeding the longitudinal relaxation times; the simplest example of an LLS is given by the singlet state of two coupled spins. LLSs were created by means of the photo-chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization technique. The systems studied were amino acids, histidine and tyrosine, with different isotopomers. For labeled amino acids with the -CH and aromatic protons substituted by deuterium at low fields the LLS lifetime, T LLS , for the -CH 2 protons was more than 40 times longer than the T 1 -relaxation time. Upon increasing the number of protons the ratio T LLS / T 1 was reduced; however, even in the fully protonated amino acids it was about 10; that is, the long-lived mode was still preserved in the system. In addition, the effect of paramagnetic impurities on spin relaxation was studied; field dependencies of T 1 and T LLS were measured. LLSs were also formed in tyrosine-containing dyads; a T LLS / T 1 ratio of 7 was found, usable for extending the spin polarization lifetime in such systems.

Description: Relying on dynamic factor business cycle indices for five South-East European countries (Austria(-Hungary), Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and Serbia/Yugoslavia), we document steadily increasing synchronization as part of a pan-European business cycle before 1913 and the emergence of a regional business cycle (including and radiating from Germany) in the interwar period. These dynamics were largely driven by trade, involving initially England, France, and Germany but increasingly centered on Germany. Our results also show that the Balkan countries traveled a long way from an economic backwater of Europe in the 1870s to a much more integrated part of the European economy six decades later.

Description: The associations between the seasonal moisture budget (precipitation minus evaporation) and atmospheric and oceanic teleconnections related with dry and wet conditions in the greater Mediterranean Basin are investigated. The driest and wettest Mediterranean winters are selected according to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the differences in the moisture budget among them and average conditions (i.e. climatology) are investigated. The analysis focuses on the role of major teleconnection indices for the conditions of the driest/wettest winters. According to the results, the Arctic Oscillation (AO) index is the best indicator of variability in the driest/wettest conditions, which are conventionally associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Large-scale climate variability over the Mediterranean Basin is strongly linked with significant changes of the moisture fluxes in the Gulf of Mexico region and partially in the east coast region of the United States (US), especially for wet years in the Western Mediterranean. The displacement of the prevailing atmospheric centres of action located over the subtropical mid-east Atlantic (Azores high) to the Northwest Atlantic determines the wet conditions over the Western and Eastern Mediterranean Basins, respectively. It is speculated that the relative strengths and positions of these large-scale systems control the Eastern and Western patterns of the Mediterranean climate variability.

Description: Supramolecular assembly allows for enhanced control of bulk material properties through the fine modulation of intermolecular interactions. We present a comprehensive study of a cross-linkable amphiphilic wedge molecule based on a sulfonated trialkoxybenzene with a sodium counterion that forms liquid crystalline (LC) phases with ionic nanochannel structures. This compound exhibits drastic structural changes as a function of relative humidity (RH). Our combined structural, dynamical, and transport studies reveal deep and novel information on the coupling of water and wedge molecule transport to structural motifs, including the significant influence of domain boundaries within the material. Over a range of RH values, we employ (23)Na solid-state NMR on the counterions to complement detailed structural studies by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering. RH-dependent pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) NMR diffusion studies on both water and the wedge amphiphiles show multiple components, corresponding to species diffusing within LC domains as well as in the domain boundaries that compose 10% of the material. The rich transport and dynamical behaviors described here represent an important window into the world of supramolecular soft materials, carrying implications for optimization of these materials in many venues. Cubic phases present at high RH show fast transport of water (2 × 10(-10) m(2)/s), competitive with that observed in benchmark polymeric ion conductors. Understanding the self-assembly of these supramolecular building blocks shows promise for generating cross-linked membranes with fast ion conduction for applications such as next-generation batteries.
