Content: The author traces the history of the decision of some Chinese intellectuals close to Hu Yaobang to assert publicly in 1978 that practice is the sole criterion of truth, and the history of the text in which the assertion was made. By showing how the epistomological notion espoused by a minority eventually became a political imperative binding upon the majority, he (the author) provides some insights into how China's policy-making system functions. Content: The author points out that the 1988-89 Nanjing anti-African protests, exposing a high degree of student discontent towards the Chinese political system four months before the spring 1989 pro-democracy movement, exhibited a complex interaction between Chinese nationalism and efforts to promote political reforms. He discusses and analyses the emergence of a racially based Chinese nationalism, the cultural and political roots of Chinese racism and attitudes toward Africans, Chinese-African student conflicts in Nanjing prior to 1988 and the 1988-89 Nanjing anti-African protests. Content: In May 2011, Inner Mongolia experienced the most serious ethnic unrest in the region for 30 years. In this article, I explore the broader context that led to the eruption of the protests, with a particular emphasis on environmental issues. My aim is to explain why environmental issues occupied such a prominent position in the protests, and how these issues were connected to ethnicity. After discussing the material and practical implications of grassland degradation for Mongolian herders, I analyse the symbolic implications of this environmental crisis for the Mongolian educated elite, who have linked environmental issues to ethnic politics and identity. I argue that in the last 20 years or so, Mongolian intellectuals have developed a highly ethnicized environmental discourse, and that this discourse played an important role in informing the 2011 protests. My analysis focuses on this discourse as it is manifested in the domains of art, academia and daily discourse. (China Q/GIGA)

Content: The main aim of the article is to establish what "stage" of development the rural economy has reached in China, 40 years after the revolution. After classifying provinces according to their rural economic structure and level of output, it considers the provincial pattern of agricultural (as opposed to rural) development and modernization; development, measured by incomes and food consumption, is then examined. A brief forward glance in the light of the current stage of rural development is offered. (DÜI-Sen)

Content: On October 1949 the PRC was formally established in Beijing. On 7 December Jiang Jieshi, who had earlier moved to Taiwan to secure a final base of resistance in the civil war, ordered the Guomindang regime to withdraw to the island from Chengdu, Sichuan, its last seat on the mainland. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) declared its commitment to the goal of unifying the nation under the People's Republic, and thus called for the "liberation" of Taiwan. Utilizing available sources, the paper explores how, during 1949-50, the CCP approached the problem of liberating Taiwan and then failed to achieve its objective. (DÜI-Sen)
