Content: The word "shorter" in the title of this volume perhaps invites one to compare this book with Thiselton's magisterial commentary that appeared in 2000.

Content: The majority of scholars view 1 Cor 9 : 24-27 as part of Paul's exemplary understanding of himself as a paradigm for Christian freedom. However, a culturally sensitive understanding of the athletic metaphors employed in these verses against the backdrop of the agonistic first century Graeco-Roman world, presents us with a rather different picture : namely with Paul engaged in a 'not too friendly' intra-textual debate with the Corinthians. In response to, what the apostle perceived as a negative challenge to his honour regarding his apparent refusal to receive financial support from the Corinthians, he in 1 Cor 9 : 24-27 engages in an agonistic defense of his apostolic integrity by referring to his deeds of honour and by also posing a challenge to his readers' lack of moral integrity.

Content: Genre or text type concerns the way material is organized in a discourse. There are only a limited number of ways in which the various functions of communication in language can take place, that is: narration, exposition, argument, descriptionption and listing. These ways represent different text types. Since apocalyptic eschatology can be presented in any of these ways, it is argued that it is incorrect to classify 'apocalyptic' texts or 'apocalypses' as a separate genre. These texts are written from a specific perspective: apocalyptic eschatology, and often in a specific code which is a cultural convention. 1 Enoch is a narrative as are the individual books it consists of except for the so-called Epistle of Enoch which is an argumentative text. The texts of the New Testament can be divided into two groups: narrative and argumentative texts. The Revelation of John is a circular letter in narrative form.

Content: As an academic study, this is an interesting book. Krause probes the exhortations of 1 Timothy and concludes that the post-Pauline church must have contained women who exercised prominent ministries, widows of power and influence, slaves who demanded equality and Christians who held diverse understandings of Paul.

Content: An important clue indicating the overall unity of the Gospel of John, including chapter 21, is often overlooked. This is the numerical value of 153 fish caught by the disciples according to 21 : 11, which represents the mathematical triangle of 17. The key text for interpreting the passage is Ezek 47 : 10, prophesying streams of living water flowing from the temple in the last days to make the Dead Sea fresh and full of fish. These symbolize numerically the children of God who receive life through believing in the signs given by Jesus, which are enumerated in the gospel. A complex but consistent numerical pattern or gematria can be demonstrated to underpin the structure and thematic of the whole gospel, particularly linking the Prologue with the Epilogue, which is expressed in the number 153.

Content: The exegesis of 2 Cor. 3: 17 is complicated by the abundance of literature on the subject. This paper, however, is not an attempt to relate the history of the exegesis of the said verse.

Content: The present set of three volumes contains the proceedings of a major research project entitled Ablution, Initiation and Baptism in Antiquity, which a number of Scandinavian scholars organised. The project involved 58 scholars. It was international, "interdisciplinary, with Historians of Religion, Classicists, Egyptologists, Biblical and Patristic scholars as well as Art Historians and Archaeologists; it should further be interdenominational with among others, Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant scholars" (from the explanation of the project in the preface in vol. 1, xlv-xlvii). The essays are in English and German. All essays, in particular the German ones, would have benefited from English abstracts.

Content: Consideration of the Gattung of the Jewish Farewell Speeches shows that the Johannine discourse (apart from 13:1ff) belongs to this genre, which exercised its influence on other parts of the Gospel as well. Materially it is different; the standing features of the Jewish speeches are reworked completely. This is indicated by eight points of comparison. The Farewell Discourses happened to be replaced very soon by the Christian genre of the Speeches of the resurrected Lord. Still, they stand out as a remarkable theological achievement accomplished within a very short span of time.

Content: One of the most important characteristics of the Old Testament faith is its personal structure. It characterizes the faith beginning with the age of Moses, and it is further maintained and intensified by those who are imbued with the divine charisma, especially by the prophets. With the prophets we have in addition a combining of the charismatic element with the personal representation of God before the people in the prophetic message on the one hand, and on the other hand its combining with the personal representation of the people before God in the intercession. Consequently the prophets do not regard the relationship between God and Israel as being founded in a treaty or covenant.
