Content: This article describes the participative methods and results of a co-operative inquiry project that explored fourth year social work students’ ethical decision-making in field education. First, the article relates the pedagogical objectives of structural social work education to the ethical challenges of structural social work practice. Second, it outlines a self-driven framework for ethical decision making that was used in the research project to help guide students in ethical decision making. Third, it highlights co-operative inquiry as a research approach that reflects critical pedagogical praxis by assisting students (co-learners) to engage in a process of inquiry that honored their capacity for constructive self-determination. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of the research findings and implications for structural social work education.

Content: This paper presents a model for ethical decision-making that is easy to teach, easy to remember, and easy to use. The model defines life, choice, and relationship as the three elements that comprise the context necessary for an ethical decision to present, and the paper proposes that maximizing each element is the best possible resolution to an ethical dilemma. The model proposes that further resolution of ethical dilemmas is impossible.

Content: This article reports the results of an exploratory study examining social workers’ attitudes and beliefs about sexual involvement with clients and their knowledge of the prevalence of this behavior as reported to them by their clients. Content: Little systematic research appears to exist that explores the complex and essential process of ethical decision-making among social workers. This paper presents results of a study of NASW members that explored factors that relate to ethical decision-making, discrepancies in ethical decision-making, and rationales for courses of action chosen. Findings suggest that both personal and professional factors are related to ethical decision-making and predict the degree to which ethical decisions are discrepant.

Content: The purpose of this study was to examine ethical decision-making among hospital social workers. The primary intent was to examine the extent to which social workers in health care identify an ethical dilemma, provide a rationale for the basis of their decision, and subsequently follow a process for ethical resolution. A pattern that emerged was reliance on rules and laws rather then using systematic frameworks. The findings suggest the need to understand ethical decision-making as part of a thoughtful, ongoing process.

Content: Social work with right-wing youth groups in Germany is a field in which social workers face various ethical dilemmas. The German national Code of Ethicsʺ, the Berufsethische Prinzipien des DBSH1, should provide social workers with guidance in solving ethical dilemmas, but in some cases the document itself is responsible for the predicaments. This article will analyze the dilemmas and present a possible solution to them by means of formulating ethical guidelines based on the document Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW).
