Content: The papers in this collection were presented at the Twelfth National Congress of the Australian Institute of Physics held at the University of Tasmania, Hobart between 1 and 5 July 1996. This anthology consists of papers presented in the special session on "50 Years of Cosmic Ray Research in Tasmania". The papers in this session demonstrate the foundation and continuing impact that Tasmanian cosmic ray research has had on Antarctic research in the discipline. The anthology comprises historical accounts of the establishment of various research programs, papers describing some of the major achievements of those programs, reviews of aspects of the field at the time of the conference and papers looking to the future needs and directions of cosmic ray research.

Content: A computer technique is described for digitising data from the sea ice maps distributed weekly by the U.S. Navy-NOAA Joint Ice Centre. Monthly maps of the Antarctic region outlining extent of sea ice cover have been available from this source since January 1973. Computer programs for the analysis of this data are described. Maps are presented which illustrate the mean, over ten years, of the extent each month and at maximum. These data have been used as climate monitor using the relation between sea ice extent and the distribution of anticyclones, Antarctic and ocean temperatures, and atmospheric CO2 levels which have been the topics of many recent studies. The data are also of revelance to polar transport studies. Ships may need to penetrate, and aircraft may need to overfly, many kilometre of sea ice in order to carry out scientific programs or to gain access to Antarctic stations.

Content: Tables of mean monthly surface temperature and plots of mean annual temperature are presented for most of the permanent Antarctic and Southern Ocean stations. Because of the geographic sparcity of meteorological stations, particularly in the Pacific sector, data from some more northerly stations are also included.

Content: A guide to the Decapoda of the Southern Ocean is presented, with emphasis on those species which have been recorded south of the Antarctic Convergence. Despite being well represented in all other oceans the decapod fauna of Antarctic waters is depauperate, with only eleven species having been reported from south of the Antarctic Convervence (Petalidium foliaceum, Notocrangon antacticus, Pasiphaea longispina, Pasiphaea scotiae, Nematocarcinus longirostris, Nematocarcinus lanceopes, Hymenodora gracilis, Chorismus antarcticus, Lebbeus antarcticus, Acanthephyra pelagica and Paralomis spectabilis). Species found in the subarctic waters north of the Convergence are also included in the key as their ranges may overlap with those of the Antarctic species. A key is also provided to the larvae of decapod families which are known to have Antarctic representatives. Short descriptions, with figures and records of occurence, are presented for each of the eleven Antarctic species to enable the reader to confirm identifications from the keys. A glossary of technical terms has also been compiled.

Content: A general guide to the Euphausiacea of the Southern Ocean is presented, with emphasis on the Antarctic species and in particular on Euphausia superba. Keys to the Euphausiacea on either side od the Antarctic Convergence are provided, and all species mentioned in the keys have their distributions mapped. Short descriptions of the biology of Euphausia superba, Euphausia crystallorophias, Euphausia frigida, Euphausia triacantha, Euphausia vallentini, Thysanoessa macrura, Thysanoessa vicina and Bentheuphausia amblyops are also given. The larval developement of the five most common Antarctic species, Euphausia superba, Euphausia crystallorophias, Euphausia frigida, Euphausia traicantha and Thysanoessa macrura is outlined and compared. The sexual maturation of Euphausia superba is described, and a description of the various methods employed in measuring Euphausiaceans is provided. A glossary of technical terms has also been compiled.
