Der Ruhrpott. Der "Goldene Westen". Man schreibt das Jahr 1887, die Gründerzeit. Der 15-jährige Bruno Kruska kommt aus Masuren ins Ruhrgebiet, um dort als Bergmann schnelles Geld zu verdienen. Gemeinsam mit Friedrich Boetzke, dem ortsältesten Hauer, dessen Sohn Karl und Otto Schablowski arbeitet er am Ausbau des Flözes "Morgensonne". Kurz bevor sie ihr Werk beenden können, streiken die Bergmänner. Nur Friedrich und Karl wollen weitermachen. Doch der Kaiser fürchtet eine gefährliche Ausweitung sozialdemokratischer Ideen... Mit einem Budget von 12 Mio. DM und einem großen Staraufgebot verfilmt, erzählt "Rote Erde" die 9-teilige Geschichte einer Ruhrgebietssiedlung in den Jahren 1887 bis 1919.
