Content: The second film by Sokurov featuring Boris Eltsin as the principal character. Now he is the President of Russia, invested with power, the man, bearing the full responsibility for the destinies of his distant compatriots as well as his closest kin and friends. Conducting a conversation with him among the members of his family, the filmmaker (second character of this film) manages to reveal his interlocutor's vulnerability and anguish ̶ features that are "human, too human". (Alexandra Tuchinskaya, The island of Sokurov) "...I do not hide my good feelings for my principal character ̶ neither do I hide the feeling of foreboding that certainly may not coincide with the real status quo. If you have discerned a Man in the leader of the Russian Parliament, a character of "big politics", that is enough for me". (A. Sokurov)

Content: The second film in the "Diary of St. Petersburg" documentary cycle is dedicated to the outstanding Soviet filmmaker Grigory Kosintsev, whose professional life was entirely devoted to the Lenfilm Studios. His flat is not far from the Studios in Vasiliev Brothers Street and in it now lives the late film-maker's widow. It is deserted, almost a museum, and comes across as a shelter for memories. This emptiness is full of memories, and the intensive looking at and listening to this emptiness reveals a respect and gratitude for the life of another man, a life of constant creative activity, and for the photographs, books and the acclaimed films that have been left behind. The special manner of Sokurov's looking and listening is dictated by such memories. These memories are not so much those of the woman now living in the apartment. Rather, it our reminiscences, we the spectators of Kosintsev, that are made real by Sokurov's camera. Although he has left this life, Grigory Kosintsev, the director of the films of the Maxim Trilogy, adaptations of Hamlet and King Lear, the latter a classic of the Soviet cinema, still occupies his place as before. It is a place reserved for him alone, both in the history of cinema and in his apartment. His presence remains. (Alexandra Tuchinskaya, The island of Sokurov)

Content: An encounter with the great Russian film director Alexander Sokurov, which gives rise to a lot of questions about his artistic stand and the problems he touches upon and resolves in his works. The film presents the director's thoughts about the history of cinema, about the power of the sound and image, about the past and future of cinema, accompanied by fragments from his films and various archival materials. Content: A loose, eroticized adaptation of Flaubert's Madame Bovary, Save and Protect is arguably one of Sokurov's more accessible films, earthy and comic and surreal. Pair this with Jean Renoir's 1933 version of the story for an examination of how two directors can approach the same material in drastically different ways. (Blu-ray.com)

Content: As with so many early films by Sokurov, this film has two dates: the first is the date of its creation (the film was then banned), the second is the date of the final edition and legal public screening. The film consists of German and Soviet archive footage of the World War II ̶ to be exact, from the end of the war. An attempt to make a large-scale documentary on this subject had been undertaken in the Soviet cinema of the 1960s: the film ̶ "Ordinary Fascism" ̶ by the outstanding Soviet film-maker Mikhail Romm had become a classic retrospective investigation of fascism. But Sokurov uses the expressive power of the documentary image in an absolutely different way. He does not amass materials for a large-scale picture of Nazi crimes. As a lyrical film-maker, in the space of this short film, he manages to present an entire overview of the historical landscape after the catastrophe. He chooses only the psychological aspect of this, showing the perpetrators of crimes as also the victims of their crimes: the execution of Hitler's generals, the miserable despair of a defeated Hitler, the shame of the crowd use only to regimentation, the shame of the nation. Here Sokurov makes an unspoken comparison with the history of his own country: it was victorious in the face of Hitler, but at the same time had bred its own dictator, Stalin. The footage is numbered; dates on both sides of the frame denote the years of Hitler's and Stalin's deaths (1945 and 1953 respectively). (Alexandra Tuchinskaya, The island of Sokurov)

Content: In "The Soviet Elegy" the long train of photos of the Soviet leaders, dead or alive, stops at the portrait of Yeltsin. At the time of shooting Yeltsin had fallen down from the assembly of the Communist Party deities, and participated in the earthly life through connections of different kinds. Family chronicle, the world of nature, panoramas of new apartment blocks and cemeteries, accidental and acute episodes of life of the ordinary people of the street form the epic picture of a universal existence. Filming in the Yeltsin's office, Sokurov shows not a working place of a high-ranked official, but an empty room of a tired office worker hurrying to go home. Then the camera finds the official at home, in deep immovable silence. This portrait of a popular figure who at that time was not the President of Russia, but an opponent of the official power, is an "anti-showcase" image. The filmmaker is interested in the personality being formed in loneliness, in silence, away from the official fuss, and only then acquiring dramatic volume and human significance. (Alexandra Tuchinskaya, The island of Sokurov)
Content: "It is a film from an extended series. It is hard to say who is the main character of "The Soviet Elegy." There are more than a hundred faces of our compatriots. But, of course, it is not by chance that it is the destiny of a famous political figure, Boris Nikolayevitch Yeltsin, that bears a special accent in the film. Though he got to power following quite typical ways, his uncommon character puts him out of the ordinary, and in the author's opinion it may be determined by his uncommon human nature. Our hero exists within the tragic pattern of the soviet socialist life. He is a character of a drama, of which he is one of the authors. "The Soviet Elegy" can hardly be called a documentary film in the proper sense. Of course, the author guarantees the accuracy of chronology, but he insists on an artistic mode of thinking, not on a political or historical investigation." (A. Sokurov)

Content: The White Dacha, the house in which Chekhov wrote his greatest works is falling into ruin. With the campaign to save it due to culminate on the 150th anniversary of his birth, actor Michael Pennington journeys to Yalta in the Ukraine to get an inside view of Chekhov's life and work. The White Dacha was Chekhov's place of both escape and inspiration. Built in 1898 by Chekhov after the success of The Seagull, he moved there to find solace after his father's death and to help his ailing health due to tuberculosis. The building is the genesis of some of his best-loved stories but stands to be lost forever as it stands on land that could be sold off; until just a few months ago the house was crumbling away, the victim of post-Soviet politics and the recession. After he died in 1904, Chekhov's house was protected by his sister, Masha, and then became a museum in 1921. As Michael wanders around the house and gardens he learns how it survived the Russian Revolution, civil war and Nazi occupation. Michael meets the individuals fighting to keep Chekhov's personal and literary legacy alive, including Chekhov scholar and director of the Yalta Chekhov Campaign, Rosamund Bartlett. The campaign hopes to raise 200,000 euros by January 2010, the 150th anniversary of Chekhov's birth. Others contributers to the programme include actress Prunella Scales and Oscar-winning playwright Christopher Hampton, both of whom have travelled to the house to take inspiration from the home of their literary hero.
