The article examines public discussions of international marriage agencies in West Germany in the late 1970s and 1980s and shows how they emerged from three overlapping developments: the commercialization of dating, changes in gender relations, and increasing global mobility and networks. Drawing on press articles, grey literature, and activist publications, as well as on promotional material from marriage agencies, the article shows how discussions about Asian women’s attractiveness, both partner’s motives for marrying, and the reasons for using commercialized forms of matchmaking were part of negotiations around heterosexual relationships in the face of women’s liberation and a crisis of marriage.
