What are the criteria against which the performance of economic and political processes ought to be judged? The present paper seeks to answer this question from the perspective of a normative individualism, i.e. starting from the presumption that the preferences of the individuals concerned constitute the ultimate standard of evaluation in social matters. It is argued that, from such perspective, the concepts of consumer sovereignty and of citizen sovereignty qualify as suitable standards for measuring the performance of markets and of politics.
