Zusammenfassung
Gerechtigkeit beschäftigt die Menschheit seit sehr langer Zeit. Erste Abhandlungen dazu finden sich bereits in der Zeit der frühen Hochkulturen des 2. Jahrtausends vor der christlichen Zeitrechnung. Darin wird sie als eine menschliche Tugend beschrieben, die darin begründet ist, dass sich Menschen gegenseitig etwas schulden und den Mächtigen nicht alles erlaubt sei. So lässt etwa Platon Sokrates sagen: Gerechtigkeit gehöre „zu dem Schönsten, was sowohl um seiner selbst willen als auch wegen dessen, was daraus folgt, dem, der glückselig sein will, wünschenswert ist“ (Platon 1989, 358a). Interessant ist dabei, dass gerechtes Handeln (z. B. der Mächtigen) zwar einerseits „um seiner selbst willen“ gefordert wird. Ein gerechtes Handeln zeichnet den Einzelnen als tugendhaft aus und unterscheidet ihn von denjenigen, die nicht über diese Tugend verfügen und die Interessen, Bedürfnisse oder Rechte ihrer Mitmenschen missachten. Doch das Sokrates-Zitat verweist auch auf einen zweiten Strang der Begründung, warum Gerechtigkeit erstrebenswert ist: Es sind die aus einem gerechten oder ungerechten Handeln folgenden Reaktionen und die zu erwartenden Konsequenzen. Dem liegen zwei Annahmen zugrunde: Erstens, dass Menschen über einen Gerechtigkeitssinn verfügen und „wissen“, was gerecht oder ungerecht ist; und zweitens, dass es im Denken und Handeln jedes Einzelnen einen Unterschied macht, ob er oder sie ungerecht oder gerecht behandelt wird. Weil gerechtes oder ungerechtes Handeln (z. B. der Mächtigen) Konsequenzen hat und deshalb positiv oder negativ auf den Handelnden zurückfallen kann, ist Gerechtigkeit auch eine Forderung der Klugheit: Wer die negativen Konsequenzen von Ungerechtigkeiten vermeiden möchte, sollte tunlichst gerecht handeln.
