Die Untersuchung gilt einer Form volkssprachigen Erzählens, die die Anfänge volkssprachiger Literatur charakterisiert, aber, jetzt verengt auf eine einzige Gattung und erheblich transformiert, auch noch im Spätmittelalter anzutreffen ist. Es handelt sich um eine epochenübergreifende Möglichkeit des Erzählens, die jedoch historisch unterschiedlich modelliert werden kann. Um dies zu zeigen, geht die Untersuchung von Ausschnitten aus einem sehr alten und einem verhältnismäßig neuen Erzähltext aus: dem Gilgamesch-Epos bzw. einem Roman William Faulkners, und beschreibt an ihnen einige Besonderheiten des anvisierten Erzähltypus, für den die Bezeichnung 'episch' vorgeschlagen wird. Im Fokus steht jedoch die volkssprachige mittelalterliche Literatur, die - zunächst überwiegend mündlichkeitsaffin - von der klerikalen Schriftkultur affiziert wird. Sie weist damit eine widersprüchliche Struktur auf, wobei je nach Thema und Zweck stärker die eine oder die andere Tradition zum Zuge kommt. Die Spuren einer entwickelteren Schriftlichkeit machen sich zunehmend auch in volkssprachigen Erzähltexten bemerkbar. Diese allmähliche Transformation wird in einem Überblick über Texte des 9.-12. Jahrhunderts verfolgt. Am Schluss der Untersuchung steht die spätmittelalterliche Heldenepik, die allerdings bereits rein schriftliterarisch ist.
